Working alongside persons with disabilities and other most vulnerable groups, our action and testimony are focused on responding to their essential needs, improving their living conditions and promoting respect for their dignity and their fundamental rights.

The provision of employee assistance programs to staff is intended to enable staff build resilience in relation to the stressors that they may face as a result of their nature of work as humanitarian workers. The total number of national staff is  42 spread out in Kampala, Omugo & Imvepi refugee settlements in Arua soon expanding to Yumbe, Moyo, Kyaka II and Kyangwali in Hoima District.

OBJECTIVE OF THE CONSULTANCY

The environment and working conditions in which the staff have to operate often involve high workload and /or traumatic events and other work factors such as long hours which could reduce employee effectiveness and therefore organizational performance.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

  1. For all HI staff:

The aim of this consultancy is therefore to offer briefing and debriefing services in Kampala or at the field station, individual and group counseling sessions to HI staff based in Uganda, by providing them with an opportunity to talk about their challenges with a professional counsellor and empowering them in identifying ways of alleviating these challenges. Additional areas to be addressed may include but not limited to:-

  1. a)Work life balance
  2. b)Stress management
  3. c)Communication and problem solving in the work place
  4. d)Conflict resolution and team building
  5. e)Change management

Duration and frequency:

In average: 1,5 h for  a group session and 45 minutes for the individual sessions : based on individual and /or group demand for all the HI staff.

The staff care is based on the self-adhesion.

  1. For the field team (Psychologists, Psycho social Workers, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists)

Exposure to traumatic stories of clients poses a great risk for staff to acquire vicarious trauma affecting work productivity and individual wellbeing.

The aim of this consultancy is therefore to offer psychological support to staff. Services expected include; facilitate clinical supervision for HI field based staff. The service will provide them with an opportunity to talk about their challenges with a professional counsellor and empowering them in identifying ways of alleviating these challenges. Additional areas to be addressed may include in addition to the previous ones, but not limited to:

–          Assess the psychological needs of HI local staff

–          Provide clinical supervision group sessions support on a regular basis to the team to ensure staff have appropriate tools to prevent own psychological problems

–          Provide Individual support upon needs

Frequency and duration of the sessions:

Different possibilities according the definition of the group:

  1. 2h  for the group sessions with ( all technical team PSY-PSS-PT) attendants;
  2.  3 h:  2 times:  1.5h : for the group sessions with attendants (PSS/PT) and  (PSY)

And 45 minutes for the individual sessions if needed based on individual demand as for all the HI staff.

The clinical supervision and psychological support is based on the self-adhesion

Indicative average working hours: 2 clinical supervision sessions by group by month (for technical field team.) alternating with the 2 proposition above.

The dates and working hours will be adapted to the contract starting date.

By the end of the mission:

  1. The Counsellor will have a better understanding of the context, environment, and conditions in the field stations that affect the staff and worked through sustainable measures.
  2. Staff will have gained coping skills in relation to the challenges faced
  3. Briefing and debriefing sessions conducted

EXPECTED RESULTS

Outputs

By the end of mission:

  1. a)Meetings with the HR & Admin Manager and selected Management staff conducted.
  2. b)Without breaking the confidentiality principle, Discussions and solution-seeking sessions with staff will be conducted on areas of challenges raised.

PROPOSED AGENDA & ACTIVITIES

The sessions will be conducted on need basis average duration in field stations will 5 days including travel days. Sessions for the Kampala office shall be on appointment basis and if need be conduct in house training sessions.

While on field mission HI will cater for the following:-

  • Meals and accommodation in the field station
  • Transport to and from the field stations
  • Transport while in the field station

REPORTING AND FOLLOW UP

Type of report

  • Written internal report – without breaking the confidentiality principle, provide a written feedback with recommendations to the HR & Admin Manager related to potential tools/systems to be put in place.
  • Verbal feedback (in complement to the written report)

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The consultant must hold a Master’s degree in counselling or clinical psychology from a recognized University.
  • At least 6 years’ experience in healing therapies, trauma counselling and conducting trainings
  • Demonstrable knowledge in refugee experience and effects of refugee work.
  • Must be available to be contacted on short notice
  • Must be flexible to fit in the program of the staff requiring the services, ready to work long hours in the field stations.
  • The working language will be English.
