Send a Cow (SAC) was founded in the UK in 1988 to help transform lives, by helping African families and orphans to grow enough food to eat, sell their produce and develop small businesses that last. They have provided livestock, seeds, training and ongoing support, to help over a million lives and their families that live in abject poverty. The Send a Cow Group currently constitutes Country Programmes in seven African countries plus the UK and USA, together with a Group Executive which is based in the UK.

Job Summary:  The Agricultural Extension Worker- KILP will be responsible for spearheading the use of and capacity building of the beneficiaries in sustainable organic agricultural practices and natural resource management, and establish and maintain relationships with Farmer Groups, liaise with Project Partners and District Authorities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Formulate detailed work plans to implement activities which address identified Sustainable agriculture development needs of project participants, families and communities.
  • Coordinate and Participate in implementing training and retraining plans for staff/partners and to the selected farmer groups or associations
  • Ensure farmers are followed up regularly, and refresher programmes and continuous learning opportunities in sustainable agriculture take place during the project as required.
  • Advise on any emerging development needs with particular attention to community and household natural resource and production management
  • Reporting on follow up, trainings, support provided to groups, monitoring and evaluation activities, farm productivity, sustainable organic agriculture.
  • Documentation of success stories and case studies
  • Coordinate Peer Farmer Development individually and as a Group.
  • Participate in streamlining gender equity in groups and individual families
  • Train families in good farm management practices.
  • Collecting data for continuous updates of SACU Program data bases including web based systems.
  • Contribute to grant proposals as required, including taking part in community assessments
  • Ensure good networking and collaboration relationships with government and other development partners in the project area

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the Send a Cow UK Agricultural Extension Worker- KILP job should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or any related field OR a Diploma in Agriculture or any related field with experience.
  • Field development experience involving application of sustainable agriculture methodologies
  • Knowledge and experience in extension services delivery including use of participatory tools and approaches
  • Experience of monitoring and managing budgets and work plans
  • Knowledge of environmental good practice
  • Experience in NGO work.
  • Community development experience
  • Experience in research and development
  • Ability to encourage and enable the rural poor, working within their communities
  • Ability to deliver training programmes using participatory methods
  • Numerate
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Report writing skills
  • Basic Excel and Database skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good networking skills.
  • Able to work well with government and other development partners
  • Riding skills with a valid riding permit
  • Good computer skills.
  • Knowledge of the language of the community
  • Ability to build high quality group dynamics
  • Ability to manage conflict and deal positively with setbacks
