Job Summary:  The Programme Coordinator Energy, Climate and Extractives will provide overall coordination, technical guidance, and supervision of the WWF Uganda Country Office (UCO) Energy, Climate & Extractive Programme to ensure timely delivery on the WWF Energy, climate & Extractive Programme’s strategy and plan through efficient and cost- effective implementation of a coherent and well-articulated portfolio of project activities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Initiates, develops and prepares fundable grant program/ project proposals and concepts, in collaboration with other members of the Organization (technical teams), in order to develop the WWF UCO Energy, Climate & Extractives programme and ensure sustained growth and expansion of the programme in line with WWF’s Mission, UCO Strategic Plan objectives and donor guidelines.
  • Develops and monitors the implementation of the WWF UCO Energy, Climate & Extractives Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting systems, for monitoring the programme performance, progress and impact of ECP projects in line with the set performance indicators, donor requirements and WWF guidelines
  • Creates strong alliances and networks with civil society organizations, public and private organizations for concerted advocacy efforts, greater participation in policy dialogue and sustainability of WWF UCO Energy, Climate & Extractives priorities.
  • Prepares annual and quarterly programme reports, documents and shares best practices, and experiences and periodically advises management, key stakeholders on Energy, Climate & Extractives related issues in line with WWF and donor requirements.
  • Develops and monitors the implementation of a consolidated ‘WWF UCO Energy, Climate and Extractives’ programme plan and budget and as well as monitor the integration of related activities in line with the WWF UCO objectives, financial guidelines and donor requirements.
  • Provides technical oversight, direction for the expansion and growth of the WWF UCO Energy, Climate & Extractives Programme and underlying projects in line with the WWF-UCO strategic plan and donor requirements.
  • Provides technical support to government and other relevant stakeholders in developing, comprehensive and harmonized policy, legal, institutional and financial frameworks for Energy, Climate & Extractives development in Uganda in line with WWF UCO guidelines.
  • Provides technical oversight in capacity strengthening of UCO and its partners on Energy, Climate & Extractives issues in line with WWF UCO guidelines.
  • Builds and maintains a competent “WWF UCO Energy, Climate and Extractives team” through backstopping, coaching and mentoring, giving constructive feedback, capacity development, in line with the WWF human resources guidelines.
  • Coordinates planning, design, and implementation of targeted research studies to generate new information and innovative ideas to address specific Energy, Climate & Extractives related issues relevant to WWF UCO’s interventions in Uganda
  • Leads in planning, organizing and coordination of campaigns, dialogues and negotiations on topical issues in extractives (mining, oil & gas) in line with the WWF guidelines and priorities.
  • Supports the development and implementation of WWF’s Africa Energy Programme hosted by WWF UCO, and establishes synergies with WWF UCO’s own national Energy, Climate and Extractives programme and projects.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Programme Coordinator Energy, Climate and Extractives job must hold a Masters’ Degree in Energy and/or Climate Studies, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Environmental and Natural Resource Management or related field;
  • Post Graduate training in program/Project Development and Management is an asset
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in environmental conservation preferably in energy and climate related conservation work;
  • Experience in sustainable energy development systems (with a good balance of renewable energy as well as oil and gas work) is a requirement
  • Experience in civil society organizational capacity development, lobbying, advocacy, natural resources management is a must;
  • Fluency in English and at least one other major language spoken (Swahili, Luo and/or Runyakitara) in the Albertine Rift is an added advantage.
