Salary Range: UGX 4,000,000 – 6,000,000 Gross

About US:

The International Community of Women living with HIV Eastern Africa (ICWEA) is a regional advocacy network and membership based organization run by and for women living with HIV. ICWEA advocacy is based on evidence of daily lived experiences to influence policies and programmes. ICWEA uses participatory processes to ensure that work done addresses the priorities of women living with HIV, including young women, from the grassroots. ICWEA promotes all voices and it advocates for changes that improve the lives of women living with HIV.

Job Summary:  The Communications Officer will be tasked with ensuring that the image and reputation of ICWEA is maintained and enhanced as an efficient, effective, responsible and responsive organization.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinates internal and external publications, including media releases, newsletters, reports, brochures, media briefing notes and regular newspaper columns;
  • Manages ICWEA’s social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter etc;
  • Attends relevant conferences, workshops, meetings or training sessions as required for the proper fulfillment of the duties for the position;
  • Participates in semi-annual and annual report writing processes;
  • Performs other duties that may arise at the direction of the Executive Director that are consistent with the level of competencies of the position;
  • Responsible for developing a communications strategy well aligned with ICWEA activities;
  • Manages media relations, ensures public relations opportunities are created and explored by maintaining positive relationships with the media and by providing them with accurate and timely information;
  • Offers coordination and mobilization support in implementing communication activities of the ICWEA women’s networks;
  • Manages ICWEA’s communications with all internal and external stakeholders, including staff, members, media, donors, relevant government bodies and suppliers;
  • Publicizes ICWEA’s role, innovations, services and activities to the local and wider community;
  • Provides support to enhance the Executive Director’s Office operations;
  • Collects, documents and publishes change stories resulting from different organizational projects;
  • Develops and supports translation of communication materials into local languages for the targeted populations;
  • Train and mentor women and girls living with HIV in communication based on Programme Activities;
  • Participate in advocacy events and engagements with relevant state and non-state actors;
  • Coordinate ICWEA related radio & TV talk shows and activities on other media platforms.

Key Deliverables:

  • Promoting & maintaining the image of ICWEA;
  • Contributing to the development of communication materials to raise awareness of ICWEA’s activities;
  • Responsible for ICWEA’s digital communication platforms and liaises with the Executive Director and/or her designate to ensure that all information posted on the website is relevant, accurate and appropriately presented; and
  • Attends all relevant public forums and events for ICWEA.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Journalism or Public Relations.
  • Two to three years’ experience in communications, Journalism, advocacy or in closely related contexts;
  • Knowledge of designing various communication messages;
  • Capacity building for staff in communication and social media; and
  • Awareness of different media landscape.
  • Creative writing;
  • Mobile and Web content/ social media management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  • Presentation/facilitation skills;
  • Coordination and networking skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Report writing; and
  • Planning and organization skills.
  • Attention to style and detail;
  • Self-driven;
