Note: This position is only open to Ugandan or refugee women living in Kampala. SWB will not sponsor work permits for this position.

About Soccer Without Borders:
Using soccer as a hook, our whole-person approach helps newcomer youth develop personally, gain consistent adult mentors, build friendships across cultures and grow in confidence on and off the soccer field. Founded in 2006, Soccer Without Borders operates in multiple locations in the United States, Uganda and Nicaragua, supporting refugee and other newcomer youth from nearly 60 different countries. While soccer is central, SWB’s program model also includes educational support, English language development, team-building, civic engagement, and cultural exchange activities.
SWB first arrived in Uganda in 2008 and has operated out of the Nsambya Gogonya neighborhood of Kampala since 2009. It currently operated a Youth Center, which serves as the home base for its English Literacy Classes, Football teams and Girls Empowerment Program.
About Women’s Sports Corps:
Women’s Sports Corps (WSC) is an elite fellowship opportunity that mobilizes select post-collegiate female athletes to advance gender equity through sport globally. Fellows work directly with community based, sport for social change organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to strengthen their girls’ sport programs, promote female coaching and fill a vital need for more female athlete role models in communities around the world. During this experience, WSC Fellows contribute to the growth of girls sports programs, support leadership opportunities for local female coaches, contribute to the mission of their host organization, and further develop their own leadership skills while transitioning from athletes to global sport advocates and ambassadors.
The WSC Role:
Women’s Sport Corps Fellows are select female athletes and coaches who have the desire and skill-set to share their experience, knowledge, and expertise with sport-for-development organizations as well as the passion to support the development of girls’ sport programs and female coaching pipelines. Fellows placed at SWB will have the opportunity to:
- Support SWB and local partners in growing and developing girls’ soccer, leadership, and educational programming
- Work directly with youth and adolescent girls’ teams as a mentor-coach, serving as a positive role model and example of female leadership
- Provide other supports and activities within your skill set and in service to SWB’s mission and programs
- Develop their personal leadership and explore future career paths
Responsibilities of a WSC Fellow: WSC Fellows will be take on a variety of responsibilities and projects throughout the year that further the mission and impact of Soccer Without Borders. These responsibilities may include:
- Planning, organizing, and delivering soccer and leadership clinics in partnership with SWB and local partners
- Coaching girls’ soccer teams including organizing practices, matches, tournaments
- Leading off-field leadership, teambuilding, and educational programming
- Collaborating with and the international WSC Fellows
- Engaging in curated activities and reflections (facilitated by WSC) that will allow Fellows to explore and further develop their personal leadership
- Keeping a weekly/monthly blog for WSC that highlights their experiences, struggles, observations, and successes in partnership with the International WSC Fellow
- Supporting SWB in other areas of work related to its Girls Empowerment Program, assisting in classes teaching leadership, sexual and menstrual health and self-esteem.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- University degree (or currently studying) is strongly preferred; in a related field such as Human Rights or Public Administration is a plus
- Three to five years of football playing experience; preferably at a Secondary School or higher level (will be tested)
- Previous football coaching experience is an added bonus, but not required
- Fluency in Written and Spoken English (will be tested if necessary)
- Comprehension of French, Swahili, Lingala or Arabic a plus
- Completion of “O” Level and “A” Level Exams is Required
- Basic Computer skills, such as G-Mail and Word are required
Time Commitment: WSC Fellows will serve in a full-time capacity for 6-12 months (5-6 days per week). Desired start date is January 2nd, 2020.
