About IOL ACSE ( Advanced Certificate in Secondary Education )
| Addressing the need for an advanced qualification, specifically aimed at teachers with outdated three-year diplomas, IOL has designed a level 7 Advanced Certificate qualification. The course aims to deepen the knowledge and skills of existing teachers so that they can perform optimally in a modern education environment.
The proposed qualification is a unique Namibian qualification that covers school subject content and their subject didactics as well as management and learner support. Such a curriculum model covers therefore both the basic upgrading and some professional specialisation to the benefit of both individual teachers and the quality of education at large. It is hoped that this model will be used in future as a benchmark to evaluate other advanced certificates available in Namibia. This one year, full-time programme addresses a huge need for upgrading teachers’ qualification while there are adequate initial teacher education programmes available. The proposed Advanced Certificate has one downside because it has a secondary focus while the bigger need for upgrading lower and upper primary teachers should also be addressed. Such a future primary-focused Advanced Certificates would then not require teachers to switch tracks from primary to secondary teaching. The main challenge will be to maintain and improve the standard of the courses and meet overall educational objectives in order to equip, educate and empower administrators, staff and teachers to improve the quality of education in Namibia. |
