About Makerere University School of Veterinary Medicine
College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-Security (COVAB), Makerere University, by far the oldest and leading academic veterinary institution in the region, is Uganda’s number one academic, research and education pillar in the animal and associated industries. Her primary mandates are – training, research and outreach services. COVAB was established in 1922 as a technical certificate training unit of Makerere College that was later upgraded to veterinary diploma training department in 1949 under British colonial rule. From 1953, the department offered a Veterinary degree of the University of London until 1963 when it reverted to the University of East Africa. The Makerere University Act of 1970 established it as a legal entity that became the Makerere University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1971. In between the 70s and 90s, guided by a public-sector led economy, COVAB primary aim was to produce quality veterinary degree graduates to serve in the state sponsored veterinary departments across the country.
Paradigm shifts and strategic direction
With globalization and alterations in macro-economic policies, the public outcry for a development-oriented University, crave for competences that transform young generations into entrepreneurial and useful citizens, the demands for poverty eradication and creation of sustainable livelihoods, COVAB has transformed. In line with Uganda’s 2030 strategic vision: “prosperous nation, beautiful country, and harmonious people,” and the Makerere University Strategic plan, the School’s vision and mission evolved. COVAB now envisions her purpose as to capacitate people and empower communities while fostering sustainable development through impact-oriented research, training and offering services in animal and related agricultural, biomedical and wildlife tourism industries. The goal is to contribute to improved well-being of Ugandans and sustainable economic growth. COVAB has shifted from being a mono-degree institution, offering the state sponsored classical Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree, to a multi-degree and multifunction service institution offering diverse demand driven undergraduate and graduate training programs, research and development outreach services.
The COVAB 10-point paradigm shift principles include transforming from being:
· An Academic to Development Institution (Academic & Strategic Programs);
· Veterinary-medical to Holistic Veterinary Science and Education;
· Degree to Holistic (both Degree & Non-degree) education;
· Training for stakeholders to Training with stakeholders;
· National to International Accreditation;
· Single awards to Joint degree awards;
· Dependent to Self-reliant institution;
· Disciplinary to Problem solving (Multi-disciplinary) programs;
· Employee (Ivory tower) to Employer (Entrepreneurial) graduates and staff.
· A college to a Constituent Regional Veterinary College of Makerere University.
This strategic direction which has the blessing of government and international partners, has indeed led to an increase (>400%) in student enrolment from 150 students in 1998 to 700 in 2009. With vigorous integration of E-learning Technology, COVAB’s strategic student enrolment target in demand-driven programs is 3000 by the year 2018.
