About USAID Defeat TB project:

University Research Co., LLC (URC) is implementing the USAID’s Defeat TB project. Aligned with Objective #3 in USAID’s Country Development Cooperation Strategy and in support of the Government of Uganda’s TB Program, this five-year, USAID funded project’s goal is to increase TB case notification, case detection, and treatment outcomes through health system strengthening.  The Defeat TB project goal is to increase TB case notification, case detection, and treatment outcomes through health system strengthening with the aim of ending the TB epidemic in Uganda.

Job Summary:  The Ambulance Driver performs the operations, maintenance, and management of project vehicles, including routine maintenance, as well as providing transportation for project activities for all staff. The Driver will perform office support tasks, as may be required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Drive project personnel, hospital personnel, patients, samples, results and equipment to locations in Uganda for project activities. Maintain timely schedule set by program staff;
  • Maintain the assigned/project vehicles, keep accurate records for vehicle issues, including fuel, mileage, and trip logs, and schedule routine maintenance and cleaning;
  • Observe all company vehicle utilization policies and in country traffic laws;
  • Perform daily errands such as collecting and delivering mail, making bank deposits, purchasing items for the office, and refueling the vehicles on an as-needed basis;
  • Transport staff or consultants to project sites, field/community and offices or for implementation of activities;
  • Ensure the readiness of the vehicle, in a good mechanical condition and ensure vehicle is prepared for long trips on rough terrain prior to field visits;
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the vehicle both inside and out. Ensure that the first aid kit is in place including TB personal protective equipment and stocked always;
  • Maintain and fast track maintenance of ambulance equipment;
  • Assist in routine office chores when necessary such as photocopying, binding, filing, moving furniture, answering telephones, sending faxes and coordination and tracking of community activities;
  • Carry out routine monthly service of the vehicle, including oil changes and general service;
  • Complete the vehicle log book daily, recording all travel and requiring staff transported to sign, and submit to Finance & Administration Director for review and approval on a weekly basis; and,
  • Implement TB infection control measures at all times as will be guided by the projects’ TB prevention Advisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicants for the Ambulance Driver USAID Defeat TB Project job opportunity must hold a Valid driving License of at least Classes B and DL or CM.
  • Certificate on mechanics and defensive driving
  • A minimum of four years of work experience gained through serving within a donor funded project with proven ability to coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Excellent driving record and experience in traveling through Kampala and other districts
  • Previous work experience as an Ambulance Driver.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
