Background of ECUREI
Background of Earnest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute
ECUREI derives its name from Dr. Ernest Cook who was the first person to bring an X-ray machine to East and Central Africa, in 1910, just 15 years after discovery of X-rays by Willem Roentgen. He was a nephew to Dr. Sir Albert Cook, the founder of western type of medicine in East and Central Africa. Dr. Ernest Cook installed this X-ray machine in Mengo Hospital, which attracted patients from East, Central and parts of North Africa like the Sudan. This pioneer spirit has been handed down to the Mengo generations, and today, ECUREI, located in Mengo Hospital boasts of offering unique courses in imaging like Ultrasound and Radiography. It also attracts several students from all over Africa and as far as the United Kingdom.
