IAU is actively involved in programs geared towards the protection and improvement of lives of disadvantaged people living in urban and rural areas in Uganda and in the Great Lakes Region. InterAid Uganda is focused on its thematic areas of Rights Protection, Education, Livelihood & Food Security, Health (HIV&AIDS; Malaria; Maternal and Reproductive Health), Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), Environment and Disaster Management and good Management and Governance systems.
Job Summary: The Child Protection Officer will plan and coordinate the implementation of all programme activities to strengthen child protection, and promote Protection integration in coordination within the program activities and with other stakeholders.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Stakeholder Management
- Tasked with mobilizing the refugee communities and create awareness on Child protection issues and promote the engagement of the Child Protection Committees, School administrators and teachers & all Leaders in the implementation of the activities.
- Networking with established child care centres for referral of identified children at risk
- Participate in networking and establishing Partnership with child protection institutions specialized including those for children with disabilities.
- Participating in networking with child disability forum, Child Labour Forum under National Council for Children (NCC) and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development.
- Leading networks with tracing organizations (the Uganda Red among others Cross and International Committee for Red Cross, ICRC) to promote access to tracing services for all UASC
Process management.
- Coordinating of all child protection activities at the programme.
- Conducting site visits and follow up on identified children with protection risks
- Leading the review of the existing Foster care criteria to guide on selection of refugee foster care families for UASC.
- Working with the refugee community child protection integration committees to identify potential foster care families for identified UASC and any other refugee children at risk.
- Sensitizing and refer through the legal desk refugee parents, caregivers and guardians for registration of birth.
- Responsible for conducting outreaches on child protection in the refugee and host communities.
- Organizing children to participate in child sports groups and music and dance and drama groups and in international child days (Day of the African child, International children’s day, international children’s day of broadcasting and child lab our day)
- Providing individual counseling to refugees and asylumseekers and group counseling in the refugee communities, schools and children visiting the office during the morning address.
- Referring Children with Disability to health unit and PSN for assessment and provision of assistive devices.
- Liaising with the PSN to mobilize refugee children living with disability for support towards accessing education in special needs schools
- Actively facilitating refugee child protection integration committees for awareness and sensitization campaigns in refugee communities on the dangers of child labour, identification, intervention and or referral of all children at risk.
- Referring children to the education desk for school fess and skills training support.
- Compiling timely weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and specific activity reports.
- Participating in meetings, information dissemination sessions with PoC, special events and any other activities as required by the Supervisor.
Records Management
- Maintaining proper and updated records on all PoCs and in particular identified refugee children at risk on their files.
- Signing in and out all accessed PoC files at the records office as per agreed SOPs
Support to other teams and sections: Contribute to coordinate the integrated protection activities in the urban refugee program s and other interventions to promote their protection.
Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, and reportingstrategies to mitigate against risks that may happen in the child protection and other programs of the section.
Compliance: Ensure that the internal process and work plans are adhered to and any adjustments communicated in the right forum.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the InterAid Uganda Limited (IAU) Child Protection Officer job opportunity should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Law, Human Rights, Arts, Education, Social Work and Social Administration, Psychology, Child Development, Child Psychology, Community Psychology, or any equivalent accrued working experience in a related position
- At least five years’ relevant experience in programme development and implementation of child protection programs with an NGO.
- Additional professional training in child protection will be an added advantage
- Broad knowledge and understanding of child rights issues and child rights instruments.
- Good communication skills, oral written and presentation.
- Excellent computer skills e.g in Ms Word, excel and power point
- People centred.
- Good report writing skills
- Ability to work under a multi-cultural environment.
