Center for Health, Human Rights & Development (CEHURD) is an indigenous, non-profit, research, and advocacy organization which is pioneering the enforcement of human rights and the justiciability of the right to health in Eastern Africa. Founded in 2007 and registered under the laws of Uganda, it was formed to contribute towards ensuring that laws and policies are used as the principal tools for the promotion and protection of health and human rights of populations in Uganda, and the East African region.

Job Summary:  The Communications Associate will support Center for Health, Human Rights and Development’s (CEHURD) communication and branding. This will include external communications (e.g. public relations and publications) and international communication in line with CEHURD’s strategic plan and policies. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in building communications and promotional materials; s/he will support the organization to promote its programs and share its work with the public. This is a dynamic position that includes fundraising, development and communications responsibilities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Strategic Communications

  • Write concise and compelling content showcasing the organization’s work including developing and disseminating a quarterly newsletter
  • Support staff members’ fundraising meetings, conference presentations, and exhibitions
  • Assist staff members with brand adherence for all communications, presentations and publications— including supporting staff trainings
  • Participate in communications research and work closely with the research team to translate evidence and data into messages for policy makers and other key stakeholders

Digital Engagement

  • Support the ongoing governance and maintenance of core content on our website—including regular updating of the website, developing dashboards on key events and tracking web traffic against targets
  • Support our social media presence (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram)

Media Relations

  • Track developing trends and news items related to our vision, strategy, and objectives via media monitoring
  • Communicate to the team appropriately manage public relations and promote CEHURD opportunities and activities through local media

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the Global Health Corps Communications Associate career placement should hold a Bachelor’s degree*
  • At least three years of professional experience*
  • Strong writing skills with experience writing for digital media, e.g. blogs or newsletters*
  • Professional experience in posting with and monitoring social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and/or Instagram*
  • Ability to translate research into compelling messaging, evidenced by experience writing policy briefs, talking points, reports, or memos*
  • CRM database management experience, e.g. Salsa or Blackbaud
  • Website editing and management experience, ideally including tracking web traffic
  • Public speaking experience
  • Experience working with media contacts, including writing press releases
  • Cultural competency and commitment to social justice
  • Passion for using strategic communications to advance human rights
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong accountability and attention to detail
  • Comfort with public speaking before large audiences and debating complex issues
  • Willingness to work outside the city with limited access to malls, discotheques, or other related social activity
  • Resilience in a highly dynamic working environment
  • Ability to multitask and work with teams as well as individually

In addition to the intensive leadership development and professional growth that the fellowship offers, the Global Health Corps fellowship includes the following benefits.
