About us:
Chemonics International Inc., a US-based international development organization, seeks a Communications Specialist for the anticipated USAID five-year Integrated Child and Youth Development (ICYD) Activity in Uganda. This activity will aim to improve youth learning outcomes (P1-P4 reading in local language and English), while ensuring that children and youth are safe and healthy in their community and learning environments. Specifically, this activity will improve learning outcomes, address primary school retention, provide technical assistance to orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) service providers, and employ high-impact local partnerships to accomplish the activity’s objectives. This position will be based in Kampala, Uganda with intermittent travel throughout the country.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collate stories and data for use in high-impact internal and external communications to “tell the story” of ICYD activities;
- Identify channels for communicating key messages, including social media and other communications platforms;
- Support the compilation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports produced by the program;
- Ensure that the project and all technical staff abide by USAID branding and marking requirements, and draft and maintain appropriate communication templates;
- Train local professional staff, including subcontractor staff, in public outreach and strategic communications methodologies and processes, and USAID reporting, branding, and marking guidelines.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal applicant should have a Master’s degree in communications or similar relevant field is preferred but not required.
- A combination of a Bachelor’s degree and the required number of years’ work experience may substitute for a Master’s degree;
- Minimum seven years public awareness and communications experience including planning and implementing strategic communications and advertising campaigns;
- Experience with USAID and PEPFAR reporting, branding, and marking guidelines;
- Knowledge of local press and electronic media, and strong relationships with media agencies and journalists;
- Excellent writing and editing skills in English;
- Experience in design and production of print and audio-visual media, including brochures, publications, videos, radio campaigns, etc. preferred;
- Familiarity with the Ugandan education, OVC, and health sectors preferred;
- Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity.
