About US:

Welthungerhilfe (WHH), founded in 1962, is today one of the biggest non-governmental aid and development agencies in Germany. The objective of the program in Uganda is to improve livelihoods of the most vulnerable population in rural areas through interventions that increase their Food and Nutrition Security, improve sustainable access to WASH services and support the employability of the youth through vocational and life skills training. We understand that livelihoods of the rural population in Uganda have improved in a sustainable way when people are able to meet their basic food needs, have access to clean drinking water and safe sanitation, live in a healthy environment and take up opportunities to earn and diversify a decent income.

 

In 2022, WHH and its implementing partner DEEDs won Welthungerhilfe’s innolab – a BootCamp to develop the most innovative ideas found within WHH worldwide into viable solutions. In 2023, WHH and DEEDs work towards establishing a sustainable social business around NatureNow – a solar irrigation pump build from recycled material. For this purpose, WHH is looking for an individual that can support NatureNow as Operations Manager on a service contract based in Fort Portal.

 

Purpose and Task of the ConsultancyIn close collaboration with DEEDs and WHH Fort Portal team under the supervision of the Head of Project in Fort Portal, the Service Provider shall ensure that all back-end operations are carried on in an appropriate, timely and cost-effective manner, significantly contribute to building and improving operational management systems, structures and processes as well as being part of an exciting journey of NatureNow pump production. This shall include but shall not be limited to the following tasks:

  • Formulate strategy, improve performance, resources, and secure compliance. You should be ready to mentor NatureNow Team, find ways to increase quality of customer service and implement best practices across all levels.
  • Manage, organize, and coordinate orders and inventory management.
  • Maintain constant communication with management, staff, and production partners to ensure proper operations of the company.
  • Lead, motivate, and support a small and young project management team within a time-sensitive and demanding environment to ensure smooth running of operations.
  • Grow the efficiency of new and existing company processes and procedures to enhance the company’s internal capacity.
  • Scout for more talented marketeers who are open for collaboration and selling of the pumps.
  • Manage timely data collection to update operations metrics to achieve productivity targets, reduce costs per unit, eliminate errors; conduct budget reviews and report cost plans to management.
  • Collaborate closely with the marketing team to ensure customer satisfaction and service.
  • Ensure all operations are carried out in an appropriate, cost-effective way.
  • Improve operational management systems, processes, and best practices.
  • Plan for materials, plan inventory and oversee warehouse efficiency.
  • Help the company processes to remain legally compliant.
  • Formulate strategic and operational objectives.
  • Examine financial data and use them to improve profitability.
  • Manage budgets and forecasts.
  • Perform quality controls and monitor production KPIs.
  • Find ways to increase quality of customer service.
  • Ensuring all operations are carried on in an appropriate, cost-effective way.

 

Timeframe of ConsultancyThe Consultant shall be contracted for an initial period of six (6) months starting from 15th April 2023 until 15th November 2023. The consultant shall provide 120 working days with flexible working hours (aiming at 20 days per month).

 

There are good prospects for a contract extension and integration into the newly established company.

 

Results / Outputs of the ConsultancyThe deliveries of the Consultant are measured against the Key results set by the team for 2023:

  • At least 30 pump prototypes made and tested.
  • Reduced cost of pump production to 900.000.
  • At least 5 pumps sold to substance farmers by end of 2023.
  • 4 updated versions of operational manual developed.
  • At least 4 fulltime staff by end of 2023 (funds raised to accomplish this)
  • Reduced average time of production from 3 days to 8h.
  • 90% of assigned tasks completed by 2032.
  • 4 measures taken to improve team skills by 2023.
  • At least 10 partners signed by end of 2023.
  • At least one post per week on social media.
  • Pump tested and demonstration in 7 districts.
  • 10 visibility measures are taken.
  • At least 30m in revenue by end of 2023.
  • At least 100.000 Euros fundraised by end of 2023.
  • 20 pumps sold by end of 2023.
  • 5 revenue streams tested.

 

Renumeration

  • The consultant shall be paid on monthly bases based on the daily rate offered by the consultant, for 20 working days.
  • The contract shall be applicable to 6% tax.
  • The quoted daily rate should be in UGX and inclusive of all transportation, office running & communication costs.

Profile of the Consultant

  • Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Commerce, or marketing.
  • Degree in Business, Operations Management, or related field
  • 3+ years’ proven experience in an operations management position and/ or managing multifaceted companies.
  • Similar experience in operations management is an added advantage.
  • Excellent ability to delegate, supervise and take on responsibilities while maintaining organizational control of current orders, deadlines, and customer service.
  • Excellent relationship building skills. Prior experience in supervising or managing people (i.e., craftsmen) as well as experience working with the informal sector in a professional capacity.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills: Working in the informal economy means that there are always several challenges (and opportunities) that require quick thinking and pro-active problem-solving.
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle with a valid driver’s license to reach out to several teams.
  • Keen eye for quality and details to ensure long-lasting and fine-finished products.
  • Tech-savvy: Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and use of social media accounts like WhatsApp, Trello and /or Airtable.
  • Prior customer service experience is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of organizational effectiveness and operations management
  • Experience budgeting and forecasting
  • Familiarity with business and financial principles
  • Multilingual communication skills (Lutooro preferred) are an added advantage.
