About US:
Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) is a statutory body established by UNMA Act, 2012. The Act empowers UNMA to provide for the control and development of technically sound and scientific meteorological services in Uganda.
Job Summary: The Director Forecasting Services will oversee the Operations of Short and Medium range Weather Forecast and Alerts for Aeronautical and Public Weather Services, including Engineering and ICT.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Head of the Directorate of Forecasting Services
- Advises the Executive Director on Forecasting matters
- Prepares Annual work plans and budgets for the Directorate
- Supervises and appraises senior staff in the Directorate
- Responsible for weather forecasting, public weather services, and aeronautical services including briefing;
- Maintains equipment standards and ensure that communication procedures are adhered to as specified by World Meteorological Organization (WMO);
- Coordinates and implements activities of WMO Commissions for Aeronautical Meteorology (CAeM) and Marine Meteorology (CMM);
- Ensures an efficient telecommunication system for rapid dissemination and exchange of meteorological data and products;
- Identifies and initiates procurement of relevant technical equipment used for forecasting;
- Identifies skills and competency gaps in the Directorate
- Coordinates the implementation of Quality Management System in the Directorate.
- Ensures directorates performance and financial targets are met
- Ensures implementation of Quality Management System in the Directorate.
- Performs any other relevant duties as may be assigned to him/her by the Executive
- Director.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) Director Forecasting Services job must hold an Honors Degree in Natural Sciences (either; Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics,
- environment or geography) obtained from a recognized University.
- A Masters’ degree in Meteorology.
- A Professional qualification in Numerical Weather Prediction or Nowcasting.
- Additional qualification in either Public Administration, Business Administration or Management Studies is an added advantage.
- A minimum of eight years of working experience (3 of which should be at senior management level) in a related field, working with a reputable organization with a clear knowledge in government systems.
- Chart Analysis skills
- Management and Research skills with proven ability to write technical documents and
- Communication with international scientific teams.
- Age: 35 years and above.
