bout Project:

Most of GIZ’s work Is commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. In addition, GIZ Uganda works on behalf of development agencies like the European Union, DFID and USAID. The Cooperation currently focuses on Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency; Rural Development, Water and Sanitation; and Good Governance and Civil Society. in addition, GIZ provides support through the “One World – No Hunger” initiative, specifically in promotion of responsible and sustainable fisheries, nutrition sensitive potato value chains and responsible land policy in Uganda. Country wide, there are also ongoing projects in climate change mitigation, skills development as well as supporting refugee hosting districts in Northern Uganda both nationally and internationally, GIZ Uganda supports the Nile Basin initiative (NBI) In planning and coordinating sustainable management of water resources in the Nile Basin.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Safely and responsibly performing all official travel using official vehicles.
  • Regularly servicing and looking after official vehicles.
  • Taking account of all available information on road conditions, accessible routes and locations.
  • Running official errands and assisting with other office work.
  • Strictly follows GIZ rules including GIZ safety standards. Completes the vehicle log correctly and conscientiously in accordance with GIZ standards

Driving

  • Provides passenger transport in an official car for office, project or programme staff official visitors and guests.
  • Runs errands for the project, programme or office, e.g. sending letters and messages, paying bills and buying smaller quantities of office supplies.
  • Helps with transporting goods.
  • Completes the vehicle log correctly and conscientiously in accordance with GIZ standards.

Maintenance of car

  • Regularly cleans the interior and exterior of the vehiclels) regularly
  • Checks oil, water, brakes and brake liquid, tyre pressure, battery levels and the entire vehicle, monthly or every 5,000 km (whichever is first), headlights, brakes, bodywork for dents etc.
  • Responsible for the project vehicle documents and their good condition, keeping a vehicle log and recording monthly maintenance
  • Reports need for service and carries out minor repairs
  • Immediately reports all involvement of the project or office vehicle in accidents, including minor accidents, damage, loss or theft of vehicle fittings.
  • Monitors and reports the need to renew car insurance incl. official cars used by other programme personnel
  • Compiles driver reports on condition of vehicle.

General services

  • Wears proper attire
  • Serves all passengers in a friendly manner
  • Takes team members to the field (travelling to all regions in Uganda is necessary on a regular basis)
  • Runs errands for the programme e.g. delivery of letters/messages, payment of bills, and makes minor purchases as directed
  • Is responsible for official documents in vehicle
  • Is responsible for a special petty cash and submits vouchers for accounting on a monthly basis
  • Does not use, at any time, the car for his/her own private purposes. Such misuse of the vehicle is considered a serious misconduct, and will immediately lead to a warning and may result in dismissal

Knowledge management

  • Uses all available information (including current radio news on traffic conditions) to update daily knowledge of road conditions, current passable routes and locations, and shares this information with other office drivers

Other duties/additional tasks

  • If there is no outside driving activity, s/he stands by in the office, supports other colleagues in case of need, and does other office work as assigned
  • Reports any incident whilst off duty that may affect his/her driving licence entitlement, as well as any newly known health problems that may affect his/her ability to drive
  • Assists in and/or carries out other activities and any tasks as assigned
  • Undertakes further job training related to his/her position and duties, if required.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Secondary school education/ Advanced secondary Education.
  • Holds a valid driver’s licence.
  • Defensive Driving skill is an added advantage
  • Good knowledge of both spoken and written English language.
  • Discipline and punctuality.
  • Resilience and patience.
  • Familiarity with the respective duty station and Uganda generally.
  • Appropriate appearance and attire (possibly uniform, friendly manner with all passengers).
  • Ensures unrestricted availability of vehicles at all times and reports restrictions immediately.
  • Willingness to up skill as required by the tasks to be performed and corresponding measures are agreed with management.
  • At least 1-3 years’ work experience as a driver with references
  • No major accidents in the past 3 years.
