About US:

PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools) is a UK based charity/social enterprise with a mission to ‘expand access to sustainably delivered, quality secondary education across Africa’. PEAS establishes and operates low-cost secondary schools in Uganda and Zambia in areas where access to quality secondary education is limited due to cost and geographical barriers. PEAS’ interventions are built upon 3 pillars of education impact; Access, Quality and Sustainability. Since opening its first schools in 2008, the PEAS network has grown to 31 schools, and we are currently educating over 16,000 students. PEAS Uganda has about 50 staff at the Country Office and over 900 staff working in the network schools.

Job Summary:  The Education Coordinator will report to the Head of Programs and be part of the program team at Uganda country office. Will be responsible for leading and supporting the development of teacher training and key tools for use by and with school staff to drive a greater consistency and quality of teaching and learning. The role will also involve coordinating education programs across the three regions which drive the quality and equity of our schools. The role will work closely with Head of Quality Assurance, Regional teams and UK Education Technical Team. This is an outstanding opportunity for an exceptional educationist with a strong understanding of best practice teacher and school leader development and proven track record in successfully driving network or school level consistency, teacher and leadership development.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Work with the programs team to identify priority areas for standardized curriculum and assessment across the network
  • Liaise with schools to develop assessment schedules and materials for the network
  • Lead the development of standard schemes of work for 11 key subjects for PEAS’ O-Level
  • Support development of teaching innovations such as Curriculum Maps

Coordination and Management

  • Coordinate the implementation of key projects to drive quality and equity, to ensure they are consistently embedded across the network by PEAS’ three regional teams
  • Coordinate school resource needs evaluation and utilization across the network, particularly Textbooks, Science and computer laboratory equipment
  • Coordinate the Programs team to use PEAS’ strong M&E data to design school specific interventions, such as the school support strategy following examination results each year
  • Coordinate the PEAS’ program, in terms of its demands on school leader and teacher time

Design Materials for Teacher and Leader Development

  • Conduct Professional Development needs assessments for both teachers and school leaders
  • Lead and coordinate development of training sessions and supporting materials for school leaders
  • Lead development of teacher professional development sessions and supporting materials

Documentation and Reporting

  • Plan and facilitate quarterly meeting to review Education Program implementation progress against targets
  • Maintain records of workshops, trainings and meetings conducted
  • Contribute to PEAS’ reporting to donors on a quarterly basis

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must either hold a Bachelor in Teacher Education or a Bachelor in Education (Arts or Science) – Secondary  or Bachelor in Educational Psychology or  International equivalent
  • Previous experience working in a very low-cost context and in secondary schools
  • At least five years of experience either teaching or managing and coordinating education activities, with at least 2 years in a management position
  • Contextual Experience: Experience working in Uganda Secondary School context or interacting closely with Uganda Secondary school systems, understanding of Uganda National Curriculum, Uganda National Examination Assessment and Ministry of Education and Sports’ Basic minimum requirements for operating secondary schools.
  • Research and study: Academic experience beyond a Bachelors, exploring the topics relevant to this role
  • Donor reporting: Experience working with institutional donors and/or writing complex reports
  • Partnerships: Experience of working in partnership with other education organizations or NGOs to deliver impact for your own organization
  • Project Management: A qualification in Project Planning and Management.
  • Critical Thinking and Problem solving: Ability to get things done and drive progress by focusing on solutions as opposed to problems.
  • Project management: Experience in supporting remote teams and individuals to deliver a project in a high quality and timely way
