The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is an international NGO working to ensure long term conservation and protection of chimpanzees and their forest habitats though empowering and enhancing the national and local institutions (government agencies, local government and local communities) to be effective custodians of the endangered ape.
Job Summary: To manage all activities pertaining to Conservation education and outreach at the different JGI projects.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Formal Education Programs
- Promote educational programs and resources to the target audience through development of awareness and training materials
- Train teachers and students on how to integrate Environmental Education into school curriculum
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and writing reports
- Research and develop educational programs and resources for schools and community groups or visitors to sites of special environmental interest
- Liaise with colleagues, teachers on the design and delivery of educational programs
- Train teachers in the use of resources and in delivering environmental education sessions
- Act as a point of contact for teachers, educationalists and on environmental educational issues
- Organize events and activities to raise awareness of environmental issues
- Recruit, supervise and work with volunteers 1. Manage budgets for projects and educational programs
Non-Formal Education Programs
- Manage the forest education program including provision of awareness materials, interpreting the natural environment and set up of demonstration sites, for conservation activities
- Supervise the community education programs pertaining to different conservation projects
- Oversee and supervise the delivery of the implementation of the Roots & Shoots program
- Coordinate and supervise local and international volunteers
- Develop education program budgets and work plans and seek revenue generating opportunities through proposal writing and fundraising
- Liaising with all stakeholders and partners for effective implementation of education programs
- Teaching groups and for them on-site by leading guided walks and answering questions
- Prepare quarterly and monthly reports 9. Carry out any other work as required by the organisation
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Experience: Number of years and nature/type of previous work experience required to perform this job
- Three years in a similar role
Educational Requirements: The minimum education level required to perform this job
- Bachelor of Environmental Management with a post graduate qualification in Education or Bachelor of Science in Education with a post graduate qualification in Environment Management.
Additional Skills: In addition to the experience and educational requirements listed above
- Good report writing skills
- Teaching and presentation skills
- Ability to speak local languages
