Emergency Grants for Community Responses to Mitigate the Impact of Covid-19 in Marginalised Communities in South Africa.
Hlanganisa Institute for Development in Southern Africa (HIDSA) invites eligible organizations to apply for funding to bolster South Africa’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Funding Information
Through this emergency grants facility, Hlanganisa invites grassroots organizations and interest groups to apply for up to R50 000 to provide essential community-led solutions to support local resilience and community wellbeing during this crisis period.
Indicative Activities
- Provide education and awareness around risk, prevention, early detection, palliative care, management, access to services has to be underscored
- Distribute food parcels to hard hit families and in particular, female and child-headed household with no potential for other income and increase access to running water for improved hygiene, infection control and improved recovery of patients who are infected
- Use spaza shops, burial societies and other appropriate vehicles to distribute infection control supplies (such as masks, hand sanitizers, sprays) to community members and vulnerable sub populations such as women on the streets
- Coordinate emergency transportation to designated hospitals for patients whose clinical condition deteriorates – organized through street committees and community health workers.
- Support organizations offering home based care to the sick, providing the necessary supplies and offer relief accommodation to help with self-isolation in conditions where the home is inadequate
- Provide education and awareness around risk, prevention, early detection, palliative care, management, access to services has to be underscored
- Provide alternative access to energy sources such as fire, coal, paraffin (including alternative energy sources such as solar) for food preparation during periods of heightened travel restrictions (lockdown)
- Engagement with traditional leaders for buy-in and championing the control of outbreak including culture sensitive education around safe and dignified funerals
- Strengthen the capacity of CBOs and women’s organizations to collect disaggregated data to assess differential impact on women and other sub populations.Eligibility Criteria
Hlanganisa invites applications for emergency funding from community-based organizations and social movements that align to the following objectives and meet the criteria outlined below:
- Must be a community-based organization or interest group
- Must be in operation for longer than 12 months.
- Annual budget in the last 3 years should not exceed R R1 million rand *
- Must have the capability and capacity requirements needed to provide the community-led solution.*NB: In cases where a CBO is unable to manage the grant, Hlanganisa may provide funding support through a fiscal host or a more established NGO that has a verifiable existing relationship with the CBO.
Applications
Eligible organizations are invited to submit a proposal in Microsoft Word, no longer than 2-pages containing:
- Organization’s contact details, including social media profiles
- A brief organizational profile outlining major successes
- How use of the grant will contribute towards the provision of essential community-led solutions to support local resilience and community wellbeing in relations to Covid-19
- A high level work plan accompanied by a budget
