The Uganda Trypanosomiasis Control Council (UTCC) was established by an Act of parliament in 1992 (Ch 211) as semi-autonomous body charged with the responsibility of controlling Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis in Uganda with a view of enhancing human health and agricultural production so as to contribute towards the improvement of the standard of living of Ugandans. UTCC now invites young, dynamic and energetic individuals to fill the following available position. These are contract jobs for an initial period of 5 (five) years renewed upon good performance.
Job Summary: The Laboratory Technologist will be based and perform his/her duties at the UTTRC Laboratory in Njeru Buikwe District in the areas of trypanosomiasis and parasitology. He/She will set up processes and analyze various biological samples using molecular biology techniques and biochemical assays. The Laboratory Technician will use general analytical fundamentals to exercise judgment in the planning and use of experimental techniques, the modification of existing techniques, and the analysis of data. The technician is expected to perform bio-chemical, cellular, and PCR-based assays, process and analyze data, maintain proper documentation of experimental procedures and reports, use Excel spreadsheets,_ prepare written reports, and work independently in these Capacities. The laboratory Technician will be reporting to the Research & Development Manager.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collecting, receiving, labeling, and/or analyzing samples or substances using the correct testing equipment, when necessary.
- Designing and executing laboratory testing in line with standard testing procedures, recording observations, and interpreting findings.
- Ensuring that safety guidelines are adhered to at all times within the laboratory.
- Keeping up to date with relevant scientific and technical developments.
- Produce, analyze and document results in a timely manner.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate should have at least a Bachelors (second upper) in science with bias in Zoology, Parasitology or any other biological science related field from a reputable Institution.
- At least two (2) years‘ experience in tsetse or trypanosome related studies or intervention will be an added advantage.
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills and able to maintain careful attention to detail.
- Proficiency with standard software (e.g. Microsoft Excel) is required.
- Demonstrated experience keeping accurate and detailed laboratory records.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and good at record keeping.
