Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is a semi-autonomous agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities. UWA was established in 1996 and is managed in accordance with the Wildlife Act Cap 200. The Mission of UWA is: “To Conserve and Sustainably Manage the Wildlife and Protected Areas of Uganda in Partnership with Neighboring Communities and Other Stakeholders for the Benefit of the People of Uganda and the Global Community.”
Job Summary: The Laboratory Technician will perform high technical practical hands – on diagnostic and analytical work in the laboratory based investigations and ensure proper use and functionality of laboratory equipment and supplies..
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct disease diagnostic tests and assays in microbiology, bacteriology, serology, or molecular/PCR analyses and other areas as may be assigned to him/her by management.
- Participate in sample collection, processing and transportation to diagnostic facilities under the supervision of field veterinarians and epidemiologists.
- Participate in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for relevant diagnostic assays and others as they may arise from time to time.
- Maintain quality management systems in the laboratory, develop standard, verify equipment functions and calibration.
- Ensure the laboratory environment is maintained clean, safe and secure at all times as specified in the set standard operating procedures and participate in any risk assessment and risk mitigation/ management procedures that may arise.
- Ensure laboratory waste is managed according to approved SOPs and other international procedures and standards the laboratory is a subscribed to.
- Maintain quality and safety of laboratory equipment, reagents and supplies.
- Work alongside the quality assurance officer to ensure the quality management in the laboratory conforms to international standards for accreditation, as well as make necessary personal efforts to undertake relevant trainings for accreditation.
- Develop annual operations plans and monthly work plans and ensures timely and constant supply of laboratory supplies and reagents.
- Prepare periodic plans, budgets and reports.
- Perform any other official duties as assigned by Management and or Supervisor from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Laboratory Technician job opportunity must hold a diploma in laboratory sciences from a reputable government accredited institution, with expertise in microbiology, bacteriology, serology, molecular/PCR diagnostic procedures.
- Possession of an Honors Bachelor’s Degree in laboratory sciences from a recognized university or institution will be an added advantage.
- A minimum of two years of relevant working experience in a busy laboratory.
