Historical Background of Ardhi University Architecture
ARU Architecture History
The School of Architecture and Design at the Ardhi University is a successor to the Department of Architecture which was set up at the then Ardhi Institute in 1972. The Department of Architecture started offering for the first time a two-year ordinary diploma programme that was established in order to cater for the growing need for building dsigners in Tanzania. In 1975, the two-year diploma programme was upgraded to a full professional programme and the duration extended to 3 years. In consultation with end-users of the programme’s products during 1991-1996, the programme was further extended to a 4-year duration. This coincided with the elevation of the status of the Institute to a Constituent University College level in 1996 which also changed the awards to Bachelors Degrees of the University of Dar es Salaam. The School of Architecture and Design was established in 2007 composed of three departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Interior Design, offering the programmes of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design respectively, as well as Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture and Masters Degrees in Architecture (by Coursework and Dissertation).
