History of Mbeya University of Science and Technology MUST
In 1986, Mbeya Technical College (MTC) was established for the purpose of training students for the award Full Technician Certificate (FTC) under the Russian Training support.
In July 2005, MTC was transformed into Mbeya Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in accordance with the provisions of the National Council for Technical education (NACTE).
MIST was transformed to Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) in March 2012 when a provisional license was issued by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).
The College was constructed and equipped under the technical cooperation agreement between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the government of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR).It was officially launched on 1st September, 1986 by Hon Judge Joseph Sinde Warioba the then Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania.
On 1st April 2005, the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania through the National council for Technical Education establishment order of 2004 and the National Council for Technical Education Act, declared the transformation of Mbeya Technical College (MTC) into Mbeya Institute of Science and Technology. In 2012, MIST was transformed to Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) through Mbeya University of Science and Technology Charter of 2012.
The transformation was to fulfill a long term plan, of the first phase government, under the then President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. The long term plan was to transform Mbeya technical College into a University of Science and Technology.
