International Health Sciences University Bsc Medical Lab Science Course

In order to produce a graduate with the requisite competences, the curriculum model chosen for implementing the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science full time program encourages learners to be responsible for their learning process and prepares them for lifelong, self-directed learning. The curriculum further emphasizes the development of clinical competencies to ensure effective delivery of laboratory science in various practice settings in both rural and urban settings.

Duration of the Program

The BMLS direct entry program extends over a period of FOUR YEARS divided into two semesters each.  Each semester lasts at least seventeen  (17) weeks further divided into three parts:

a) Teaching block for both theoretical  and clinical teaching = 15 weeks

b) Revision period  to facilitate preparation for examinations = 1 week

c) Examination period to conduct end of semester examinations = 1 week

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES

(DIRECT ENTRY /FULLTIME PROGRAM)

Five (5) entry points are available for persons wishing to enter the four year BMLS Direct entry program:

1. Holders of the Advanced Level Certificate

In order to be eligible for admission, a candidate must have sat and passed:

1(a)  Uganda Certificate of Education examination or its equivalent and obtained passes in at least five science subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and English.

1(b)  Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education examination or its equivalent and obtained a principal pass each in Biology and Chemistry and one other subsidiary pass.

2. Holders of Kenya School Certificate of Education

In order to be eligible for admission, a candidate must have sat and passed:

1(a)  Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination with a mean grade of C+ (plus).

1(b)  Have obtained at least a C+ (plus) in each of the cluster subjects below:

– Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, English, OR,

– Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, English.

1(c)  Upgrading of courses failed in the first sitting shall not be allowed.

3. Holders of School Certificates Graded in Percentages and Average Points

In order to be eligible for admission, a candidate whose final high school marks are graded in percentages and average point systems such as in Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi must have their grades first equated by Uganda National Examinations Board, before seeking admission to the IHSU-FHS.

The prospective candidate must have sat and passed the high school leaving examinations and obtained at least 55% or Credit 5 in the following Science subjects or their equivalents: Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and English.

4. Holders of Diplomas in Health Sciences

In order to be eligible for admission, such a candidate must possess:

1(a)  A Diploma in General Nursing, Midwifery or Maternity Nursing, Clinical Medicine and Community health, Radiography, Public Health, Dental Health, Environmental health, Orthopedics or Pharmacy.

1(b)  Current registration with the Professional Council of the home country

5. Holders of Bachelor’s Degrees in Sciences

In order to be eligible for admission, a candidate must have obtained a first degree at the level of second-class lower division or its equivalent from a recognized institution of higher learning. The successful candidate shall undertake the course on full time basis for a period of four years.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES

(PART-TIME ENTRY /TOP-UP PROGRAM)

In order to be admitted to the three year part-time BMLS degree program, a candidate must possess:

1(a)  The Uganda Certificate of Education certificate, or its equivalent and obtained passes in at least five science subjects at the same sitting in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and English.

1(b)  A Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or its equivalent at least at the level of pass.

1(c)  A Certificate of registration from Allied Health Professional Council of home country.

1(d)  A minimum of two year’s continuous experience in a clinical setting in a recognized health facility.

Current registration with the Allied health Professional Council of the home country.
