Advanced Diploma in Insurance Course (ADIC) Offered at IIU
Genertal Objective
The general objective of the Advance Diploma in Insurance program is to produce graduates with technical and managerial competences to build careers in the insurance industry. The program will provide advanced understanding of technical and managerial skills needed to manage activities in the insurance industry.
Specific Objectives
- To produce graduates, who are technically competent in the area of insurance management.
- To provide students with a good understanding of theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to carry out the insurance operations at strategic level.
- To understand the legal principles of insurance and their application in insurance practices.
- To understand the process of integrating knowledge from various disciplines in running the insurance firms.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, the graduate shall be able:
- To provide strategic leadership of the insurance industry.
- To manage the different technical and administrative functions of the insurance industry.
Target
The Advanced Diploma in Insurance is appropriate for:
- today’s insurance managers and technical specialists;
- staff with aspirations to become managers in the future;
- those employees who wish to demonstrate their professional standing;
- Insurance employees without another professional qualification and those who wish to build upon existing general academic qualifications, such as a degree, by obtaining an industry-specific qualification.
Regulations
The general regulations of IIU shall govern studies and examinations for the Advanced Diploma in Insurance.
Admission Requirements
To be credit unit is equivalent to 15 hours.ve accumulated 55 credit units of which 32 must be a diploma level.e admitted to the Advanced Diploma the following shall apply:
EITHER
- A Diploma in Insurance from any professional insurance institute
OR
- Any other qualifications e.g. Degree, Diploma, Professional/experience that will be assessed by IIU for admission.
Selection of Courses
The aspirants will have the opportunity to choose and select course units from across the certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications framework. This modular structure will enable students to select course units of study according to their preference and career requirements. To be awarded the Advanced Diploma, a student must have accumulated a minimum of 445 points of which 230 points must be at the Advanced Diploma level. However, it is advisable that the student registers for compulsory courses first.

Registration of Students
- The Central Registration of students shall be conducted at the Insurance Institute of Uganda.
- The specific time for registration will be in January for the April/May examinations and July for the October/November examinations. Extensions may be allowed at a late registration fee.
Examination Load
Students will registered for not more than four courses at any one sitting
Examination and Awards
Examination and Entry
The examinations are held twice a year i.e. April/May and October/November. Registration for examinations must be done on the prescribed examination entry forms. Duly completed forms, together with the prescribed examinations fees, should be submitted to the Institute.
Students with outstanding dues (e.g. annual membership renewal and exemptions fees) will not be allowed to register for examinations.
The closing date for the receipt of examination entries is 15th March and 15th August for April/May and October/November Examinations respectively.
Postponement and cancellation of examination sittings will not be accepted after 15th March and 15th August for April/May and October/November Examinations respectively.
Examination fees, once paid, are not refundable unless cancellation of examination sitting is done within the prescribed period.
Late examination entries will not be entertained.
Referral
A candidate who fails any paper (course unit) will be referred in the failed paper and will be allowed to re-sit it.
Exemptions
There will be exemptions for courses if the students apply to the IIU upon submission of official Certificate from a recognized institution of Higher learning. This will be considered and approved by the Examination Board.
Pass Mark
In order to qualify for the award of the Advanced Diploma in Insurance, the candidate must pass all the required units of the course. The pass mark for each subject is 60%.
Approval of Examination Results
- The IIU Governing Council has delegated the power to approve all examination results to the Board of Examinations.
- Students shall be provided with examination results using the approved testimonial format.
Appeals
Any student or candidate aggrieved by a decision of the Examination Board of IIU may appeal to the Governing Council for reversal or moderation of the decision of the Board.
Publication of Results
The IIU shall publish final Examination Results of candidates in every examination and be arranged and published in a manner as prescribed by Governing Council.
Awards
The Board of Examiners of Insurance Institute of Uganda upon its satisfaction that the standard required under relevant regulations for the award of the Advanced Diploma to the candidate has been fulfilled, it may recommend to the Council that such Advanced Diploma award be conferred upon or granted to such successful candidate.
Payment of Fees
- Students should complete paying all IIU fees before they can be registered for a particular course unit sitting
- Student will not be allowed to pay course fees and register after the end of January or July of every year unless late registrations fees have been paid.
- Only registered students will be allowed to use the facilities and to attend lecturers at the IIU
Methods of Study
The exams are based on the published syllabuses, which are in themselves important aids to exam preparation and revision. It is essential that you familiarize yourself with these before commencing study.
These set out the learning outcomes expected of candidates in the exam for each unit.
The syllabuses also identify published material designed to assist you in preparing for exams under the following headings: primary text, additional reading, reference works and periodicals.
There are four distinct methods of study:
- Full-time training at a Training Institution.
- Part-time (i.e. evening or week-end classes) at a Training Institution.
- Private study.
- Correspondence by a Training Institution.
It is up to the student to choose the appropriate method of study.
Teaching Institutions
Insurance Institute of Uganda manages the provision of training and this function is carried out in partnership with various training institutions. Students will be advised of the institutions teaching the IIU courses.
