On completion of this course, you will graduate with both technical and practical competence to pursue a career in the insurance industry in Uganda.
Specific Course Objectives
The specific objectives of this course are:
- To equip students with basic foundation knowledge of insurance in order to develop a better understanding of insurance practice.
- To apply the technical and practical skills needed in starting a career in the insurance industry.
- To acquire knowledge to improve the selling, underwriting, investigating or assessing losses of insurance products to the public.
- To appreciate the importance of business ethics with special reference to insurance.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this programme, the Learner should be able to;
- Apply the basic insurance knowledge and skills to his/her workplace.
- Operate as lower level officers with insurance firms or run an insurance agency.
- Acquire technical and practical skills needed in building careers in the insurance industry.
- Acquire knowledge selling, investigating and underwriting insurance business functions in the workplace.
- Gain the necessary business ethics with special reference to the insurance industry.
Target
The Certificate in Insurance is appropriate for:
- Anyone wishing to gain a broad understanding of insurance principles, key disciplines and products.
- Employees who have no formal insurance qualifications but wish to objectively demonstrate insurance knowledge and understanding.
- Anyone working in specific technical claims handling or underwriting roles within a call or service centre environment.
- Insurance staff employed in support functions such as human resources, marketing, IT and finance wishing to develop an understanding of the industry in which they work.
- Staff working for an organization whose primary business is not insurance, but which offers insurance advice and products as part of its overall service to customers.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Certificate in Insurance the following shall apply:
EITHER
Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) certificate with a minimum of three passes. OR
Possession of appropriate or relevant professional qualifications.
Selection of the Courses
A total of thirteen papers are offered. To be awarded a certificate in insurance, one must have accumulated a minimum of 60 points. However, it is advisable that a student registers for compulsory courses first. Students who will have covered some of the papers under the COP will be exempted.

Registration of Students
- The Registration of students shall be conducted at the Insurance Institute of Uganda.
- The specific time for registration will be in January for the April/May examinations and July for the October/November examinations. Extensions may be allowed at a late registration fee.
