Investec Bursary | Bursaries in Namibia

Investec is a well-known company, established in 1974, which is not only based in South Africa but also internationally, including the United Kingdom and Australia. They offer a variety of financial products and services within their three core areas of asset management, wealth and investment, and specialist banking.

The idea for Investec bursaries was formed in order to develop the skills of young individuals by enabling them to further their education and to ensure that they are ready for employment after successfully completing their studies.

Investec Bursary Fields of Study
The bursary is available to students who aim to study full time within towards an undergraduate degree within the following fields:

  • Commerce
    • Economics
    • Business economics
    • Accounting
    • Investment
    • Finance
  • Bachelor of Commerce in Informatics
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
  • Bachelor of Science in Information Technology
  • Bachelor of Information Technology
  • Bachelor of Information Science
  • Business Science
  • Science and Mathematics
  • Commercial Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

Investec Bursary Requirements for Application
The main criteria for the awarding of Investec’s bursary are financial need and academic potential. Further requirements include:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must currently be in Grade 12 or in their first year at university
  • Working towards matric exemption with a minimum of 60% in both English and Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and a minimum of 50% in all other subjects

Bursary Package
This bursary is a partial bursary so it may not cover all the study-related expenses. The exact bursary amount is reviewed annually and so is subject to change, the bursary at the moment covers R80 000.
Applicants are encouraged to apply for additional funding via Studietrust or the Financial Aid Office at their specific universities of choice – a student loan from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) could assist in supplementing the full amount needed.
Apart from the financial aid, Investec also offers two other programs in order to further develop the successful bursars’ life skills.
1. Mentorship Programme
Bursars are paired up with Investec staff members who volunteer to be their mentors for the entire duration of their academic career. The mentors provide extensive support and guidance to the students as they face everyday challenges in their tertiary education.

2. Work Readiness Programme
This week-long program is held at Investec’s Sandton offices specifically for third year Honours students in order to better equip the students with the skills they will need when eventually joining the workforce. Students participate in activities and tasks that include self-development, self-branding (especially when searching for jobs), interview skills, teamwork, planning, pitching and presenting.

How to Apply For the Investec Bursary Programme
Those who wish to apply can either complete an Investec bursary online application or request a copy of the application to be sent either by email or regular post mail.

The Investec bursary opens the 30th April and the closing date for submitting the completed application is the end of August as the selections will be done during September, November, and December for the following year’s studies. Applicants will be notified whether they have qualified or not no later than 21 December, via SMS.

Application Details
There are a number of documents that must be submitted along with the completed application form; certified copies of:

  • The applicant’s ID
  • Grade 11 results
  • The current year’s June results
  • If already completed Grade 12: the official Matric/NSC results and June results (or progress report of all subjects if no exams were written)
  • If parent/guardian employed: payslips or letter from employer containing either a sworn statement or tax return statements indicating income)
  • If parent/guardian self-employed: latest financial statements
  • If parent/guardian unemployed: sworn affidavits
  • If parent(s) is/are deceased: death certificates
  • If parents are divorced: divorce certificate
  • If parents are separated: sworn statement from one parent

Apart from all the academic and legal certifications, Investec also require some more personal information regarding the nature of the individual candidates. For this reason, candidates must also include two testimonials that speak to the candidate’s character: one from a community or spiritual leader and another from an education official such as a teacher or lecturer.
Applicants are also required to write a short biographical essay to cover the following topics:

  • Family and current circumstances
  • Applicant’s passion, strengths, and weaknesses
  • Overview of academic career thus far
  • Any affiliations to community projects, committees or organizations
  • Inspiring books they’ve read
  • Influential person i.e. role model
  • Their plans for the future
  • Their hope for the country in 10 years’ time
  • Description of any leadership positions

Applications without all these supporting documents will not be considered.
