Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda’s largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates.
Job Summary: The Systems Administrator will provide expert support to all core/central information systems viz: (academic, research and administrative). Perform system tuning and recovery procedures for the university critical centralized systems and ensure high uptime, performance and security of the systems.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and coordinate ICT training requirements for staff in their respective units in line Installation, management and maintenance of application servers and related university systems.
- Investigate and analyze the feasibility of system requirements and develop system specifications to prevent problems and to improve systems performance;
- Maintain operating systems, business applications and security tools;
- Evaluate related hardware and software products and make recommendations for adoption;
- Plan and recommend the redesign and configuration of operating systems and system applications;
- Implement system installations, expansion, upgrades and improvements;
- Automate tasks through scripting and the adoption of software/hardware tools;
- Undertake periodic internal audits of all university systems;
- Organize and schedule External System Audits;
- Provide expert support for the information system applications in the respective units;
- Participate in developing internal local software in liaison with the Systems Manager;
- Backup and restore University Systems;
- Analyze system logs and identify potential risk issues with University systems;
- Troubleshoot any reported problems with University Systems;
- Set up and implement security policies for users of all university core systems.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Master’s degree in Information Systems, Software Engineering or Computer Science.
- Bachelor’s, degree Computer Science, Information Systems or Software Engineering
- An Oracle certificate Association (OCA);
- Certification in UNIX Systems administration.
- Minimum of three (3) years working experience, in administration and management of Information Systems, open source platforms for systems, networks and databases.
- Knowledge of relevant programming languages particularly for web-based systems;
- Knowledge in systems auditing and evaluation;
- Knowledge in other relational data base management systems (MYSQL, POSTGRESS and MS SQL Server);
- Interpersonal and communication skills;
- Good conceptual skills;
- Ability to initiate change
