Jamaica Commonwealth Scholarship
Jamaica Commonwealth Scholarship: The Government of Jamaica offers one Commonwealth Scholarship annually.
The award is open to citizens of any Commonwealth country, and is tenable at the University of the West Indies.
The award is intended primarily for postgraduate study, but candidates for undergraduate courses may be considered in exceptional circumstances.
Scholarship Application Eligibility Criteria:
- Candidates must normally be Commonwealth citizens or British protected persons resident in countries of the Commonwealth other than Jamaica and by the time of taking up the awards in October should be graduates of a university or college in their countries or holders of equivalent qualifications.
- The scholarship is open to both men and women who will not have reached their 35th birthday by 1st October in the year of award. In special circumstances applications may be accepted from candidates over 35 years of age.
- Successful candidates whose native language is not English may be required to sit the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
- The successful candidate will be required to submit a medical certificate.
The emoluments are intended to cover expenses of travel, living and study during the tenure of the scholarship, and will consist of:-
- fares (normally tourist class air rates) to the West Indies and return on expiry of the scholarship; in the case of a married scholar accompanied by a spouse-half the return passage will be paid in respect of the spouse, provided the duration of the course is more than one academic year;
- approved tuition, laboratory and examination fees;
- personal maintenance allowance at the rate of J$5,400 or TT$ 12,000.00 or B’dos$ 10,000.00 per annum for graduates;
- a maximum grant of J$500.00 or TT$l,400.00 or B’dos$l,400.00 per annum for approved books and apparatus;
- a grant for expenses of approved travel in connection with the course of up to the equivalent of 33100.00 per year;
- a clothing allowance of the equivalent of 13150.00 for scholars from temperate countries;
- for married scholars accompanied by their spouses, a marriage allowance of the equivalent of 33800.00 per annum. This allowance will be payable only to scholars who were married at the time of their application and will not be payable in respect of a spouse who holds a scholarship or who is in paid employment.
