Finnish Refugee Council (FRC) is an INGO promoting adult education and community development among refugees since 1997 as an operational partner to UNHCR and OPM.
Job Summary: The Junior Urban Entrepreneurship Officer will mainly develop and implement among urban refugees the Business Skill training activities including guidance to learners’ small enterprises, business planning and budgeting. The incumbent will ensure regular visits to monitor activities and conduct timely reporting.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical advice and skill development (40%)
- Identify technical capacity and challenges for beneficiaries, skills and knowledge they have in small entrepreneurship, business skills, income generation, livelihood activities including saving and loans.
- Identify and train volunteer Business Facilitators at community level to teach and mentor business learners, and monitor the teaching.
- Provide advisory and mentoring support to existing / established enterprises of the business skill learners on business planning, budgeting and record keeping.
- Train beneficiaries on governance and leadership, rapid appraisal of income generating activities and other capacity building trainings in order to enhance knowledge and skills to manage themselves independently.
Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning and Reporting (30%)
- Conduct regular follow up visits to Business Skill learning groups, and learners’ enterprises, to see if they are applying the practises, and provide technical advice and mentorinig.
- Track progress of the Business learning groups, and learners’ enterprises, and keep records.
- Facilitate data collection, and manage the information flow to the Team Leader and Program Manager.
- Support the preparation of business skill learners’ enterprises own monitoring plans.
- Consolidate and compile monthly, quarterly and annual reports, inclusive of success stories and lessons learnt.
Facilitate planning and organising of Business Training Course and development of learners’ entrepreneurship skills (20%)
- Conduct awareness on Small Business Skill Training course and entrepreneurship skill development among refugees and Ugandans in Kampala.
- Develop work plans to ensure effective implementation of Business Skill Training.
- Facilitate establishment of Business Skill learning groups.
- Keep up-to-date with development issues and trends with regard to income generation, small business, community development in Uganda and refugee work.
Other (10 %)
- Facilitate and link Business skill learners and entrepreneurs to trainings on life skills such as basic literacy and numeracy, VSLA, household financial affairs, risk management and planning.
- Facilitate and link Business Skill learners’ enterprises to economic development activities provided by other actors.
- Make sure there is balanced gender representation amongst beneficiaries, and women, youth and disabled are included.
- Liaise with the Livelihood and Business Training Team Leader for all decisions related to Business Skill learning groups, entrepreneurship activities, VSLAs and livelihoods, and carry out other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Finnish Refugee Council (FRC) Urban Entrepreneurship Officer job must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship, Business management, Economics, Urban Development or similar with strong experience on small scale urban business.
- Experience in VSLA methodology, livelihoods, microfinance and IGA methodology.
- Knowledge and hands-on-experience on running small urban enterprise is a must.
- Experienced facilitator and trainer, with training material development skills.
- Three years’ professional work experience in small urban business and enterprise promotion.
- Working experience in resilience initiatives is highly preferred.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and achieve results.
- Experience working with non-governmental organisations, local communities, authorities.
- Ability to use standard computing packages.
- Knowledge of some of the languages spoken by major refugee groups in Kampala; Somali, Kiswahili, Kinyarwanda.
