Department of Commercial Law
Commercial Law Department is one of the specialised departments in the School of Law .There are about two scores course units under the Department including Law of Contracts, Banking and Negotiable Instruments, Commercial Law, Insurance Law, and Consumer Law among others, taught by specialist lecturers who are at the cutting edge of the latest developments in the relevant fields.
The Department houses a number of LLM Programmes such as LLM Commercial Law, LLM Banking and Financial Services Law, LLM Intellectual Property Law, LLM International Economic and Trade Law, and LLM Natural Resource Law with specialty in Petroleum Transactions. The Department operates with a legal barometer in constant monitor of contemporaneous developments in the business and commercial world, and the accompanying legal implications are made subject of studies. Efforts are constantly being made to ensure that law as it is and law as it ought to be are adequately captured in teaching and research, thereby contributing to social, economic and political development, in line with the School of Law overall mission and vision.
The Department appreciates the seven environment of the business world to wit: the economic, technological, cultural, governmental/political, internal, natural and legal environments, with the first six regulated by the last seventh to promote the spirit of good (corporate) governance and rule of law. This reflects in course delivery, and is intended to make our students well rounded and pretty relevant to the fast evolving vagaries of the society and the ever fluid realities of the market. This is concretised by the School of Law programme of keeping students in touch with the relevant industry for hands-on exposure through voluntary attachment and exchange programmes as well as conferences and seminars.
