Kampala International University Public and Comparative Law Department

Kampala International University Department of Public and Comparative Law

The functions and courses offered by the Department of Public and Comparative Law reflect not only the public laws operating at the domestic level but also considered the increased importance and growing relevance of international and comparative law studies. As such the Department actively pursues and promotes the teaching of international and comparative law courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This was aimed at enabling students to follow and engage actively not only on legal issues gaining currency at the domestic level but also serve as agents of law reform processes and to be able to appreciate, partake and promote the understanding of international legal issues and other issues of public importance in other jurisdictions. The relevance of these courses cannot be overemphasized especially for students intending to specialize in the international arena, and such students aspiring to build a career principally in the domestic legal system. Comparative law courses enable students to appreciate ways in which others think about law, which potentially enriches the students’ understanding of what may or may not be universal in their own domestic legal systems and helps shapes the understanding of the relationship between law and society.
At the undergraduate level, the Department offers in addition to the traditional public law courses, such other courses falling under comparative and international laws consisting of core and optional courses. Some of the departmental courses include Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, International Law, International and Regional Human Rights, Human Rights in Domestic Perspectives, Constitutional Law, Comparative Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Environmental Law and Policy, and International Humanitarian Law. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers specialized LL.M programmes in Public International Law and Criminal Law and Criminology as well as offers a number of core and optional courses which students from other specialized LLMs can choose from. The Department is currently looking into the possibility of another specialized LL.M in Comparative Legal Studies.
