Following an incident that happened early this month where Besigye supporters were viciously beaten by Police, IGP Gen Kale Kayihura together with other six commanders have today received a court summon to appear before Makindye magistrate to answer cases of brutality.
The police together with some crime preventers allegedly thrashed Besigye supporter as they waved to him while heading to FDC Headquarters in Najjanakumbi where he had a press conference after he had been released from prison.
After that awful incident, Kayihura appeared on the media praising what his boys had done saying caning is the new format the police has brought on board to deal with rioters.
Many activists came up to criticize the act by Uganda police saying those who were involved should be charged in courts under ‘anti brutality law’.
Due to pressure from non-governmental organizations, the parliament was also forced to come up with a motion about continued police brutality. It is alleged that many legislators are planning to force for Kayihura’s resignation.
Though some of the officers who beat people were charged by police’s disciplinary body with excessive use of power, many Ugandans seem not to be satisfied and kept on pushing for the case to be heard by the judicial courts not police disciplinary committees.
City(Human Rights) Lawyer Ladislaus Rwakafuzi was quoted saying the Police disciplinary committee is not sufficient and elaborate on issues concerning their men and thus urged for these police officers to be tried in courts of law, a prayer that Makindye court has answered today.
