Philosophy at University of Eastern Africa Baraton (UEAB)
The philosophy and conceptual framework of the Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton are in accordance with the basic beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church concerning education and health. The concepts identified in this philosophy are God, Man, Society, Health, Nursing, Christian Witnessing, Teaching/Learning and Professional Nursing roles. God, the Supreme Being, created man to be a reflection of His being, including His character. Health, or high-level wellness, is “wholeness” as an outcome of following the physical, mental, social and spiritual laws of the universe.
Mission of University of Eastern Africa Baraton (UEAB)
The mission of the Nursing Department is to enable students to acquire professional nursing and leadership skills in order to provide holistic nursing care to alleviate human suffering and to give Christian witness in diverse health care settings.
Vision
To provide quality professional education, to be a leader in nursing education and research in Kenya and Eastern Africa, and to develop a firm foundation for establishment of graduate nursing education programmes.[tab:OBJECTIVES] The Department of Nursing provides a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and after completion of these programme of study, the graduates should be able to:
1. Provide professional nursing services that contribute to health development in Africa and also to the Seventhday Adventist church health care institutions and the world at large.
2. Demonstrate commitment to the healing ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ and to apply a wholistic approach to nursing practice.
3. Demonstrate professional responsibility for the care of patients/clients and families in a variety of practice settings.
4. Exhibit proficiency in technical nursing skills and to be role models in leadership, teaching, administration and research.
5. Demonstrate accountability and critical thinking in decision making, self awareness and continued selfdevelopment
6. Pursue graduate and post graduate education.
7. Conduct research in nursing and health care.
8. Plan academic programs and design curricula for health workers.
9. Assume leadership responsibility in health care and the society

[tab:ADMISSION] 1. The minimum requirements for admission to the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton must be met. Students who are admitted to UEAB with the necessary admission requirements for a BScN degree program are considered as pre-clinical nursing students. Upon attainment of required grades in nursing cognate subjects, students proceed to (clinical) professional nursing
courses. In addition, interviews intended to assess the preparedness of students to the nursing profession, their view of nursing and what is expected of them are carried out prior to commencing professional clinical nursing courses.
2. A mean grade of C+ (minus) or better at the KCSE, division II or better, or its equivalent, is required for all pre-service students.
3. A grade of C+ or credit in cluster subjects; Mathematics/Physics, Chemistry, (or Physical science), Biology, and English/Kiswahili
4. Foreign students from non-English speaking countries, must have their High School certificates/diplomas translated in English with an accompanying statement showing how their system equates to the Kenya System.
Foreign trained nurses must assume responsibility to have their certificates/diplomas translated to English. It is strongly advised that this is done before admission.
5. Foreign ‘0” level certificates are sent to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) for equation to the Kenyan system. This is done during the pre-clinical period.
6. For Registered Nurses, a mean grade of C plain, diploma certificate and practice license from the Nursing council of Kenya.
[tab:PROGRESSION] 1. All students must earn a grade of C (plain) in cognates and C+ (Plus) in clinical nursing courses before progressing to the next course. For most nursing courses there is a practicum and theory component. A grade for these courses consists of theory and practicum marks.
Theory comprises 60% and Practicum 40%. Failure to obtain an equivalent of C+ in either of the two parts will result in repeating the whole course and the grade that is less than a C+ will be recorded as the grade earned at that time.
2. No more than two (2) nursing science courses are allowed to be repeated. A course may be repeated twice only. A student who fails to meet this requirement will be required to discontinue from the Nursing programme.
This revised policy takes precedence over that which is stipulated in the previous bulletins and past practice, effective 1st trimester 2010/ 2011.
3. Marriages are discouraged while students are enrolled in clinical nursing courses.
4. Nursing courses taken more than 4 years previously will not be accepted for continuing in the programme. Students must ensure continuity of study.
Trimester Implementation The length of the trimester will be 18 weeks divided into two terms of 9 weeks each. Two nursing science cources will be offered each trimester with one course in each term. The end of course theoretical and practical examinations will be administered at end of the term. Exams will be marked and grades submitted as per the university policy.
Note:
• Only students registered for clinical nursing courses are affected by the terms schedule.
• The Nursing Department will have two trimesters having 18 weeks each.
• Students will register for all trimester courses at the beginning of the trimester.
ENROLLED NURSE (EN) COMPLETION TRACK The applicant must obtain a C+ or better on KCSE or Division II on KCE, including a C+ or Credit pass in the following: C+ in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics/Physics and English/Kiswahili; OR according to Provisions that may be made by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
REGISTERED NURSE/MIDWIFERY (RN/M), REGISTERED COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE (RCHN) COMPLETION TRACK
RN (general) applicants will be exempted from only the most basic nursing courses such as NRSG 215: Nursing Foundation and NRSG 229 Med-Surgical Nursing.
RN with Midwifery Registration applicants and Registered Community Health Nurse applicants will be exempted from NRSG 238: Childbearing I and beginning level courses such as NRSG 215: Nursing Foundation. They will be required to take NRSG 334 instead of NRSG 338: Childbearing Family II.
The Commission for Higher Education of Kenya regulations allow a maximum of 20 trimester hours to be transferred into the BSN program from other nursing programs. For RN’s with exceptional levels of experience and continuing education certificates (determined through submission of detailed professional biography and interview by nursing faculty), for some, nursing course challenge examinations may be possible according to the university guidelines in the UEAB Bulletin.
Nurses with specialization in ICU, Psychiatry, Paediatrics may be exempted on an individual basis from taking relevant courses where possible.

Interdepartmental Transfers Astudent wishing to change to Nursing should refer to the section “Interdepartmental Transfer” in the Bulletin and must obtain a minimum grade of C+ in (BIOL 111, BIOL 112, BIOL 245; Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry; Haematology; Parasitology; immunology; Biostatistics; PSYC 101; FDNT 234;SOCI 119). These courses must be completed before the transfer process is begun. The transfer process must be completed before beginning nursing courses and will depend on availability of vacancies in nursing. The student must have an ‘0’ level mean grade of B- and C+ in each of the cluster subjects.
Students admitted as pre-major or pre-University are not eligible for inter-departmental transfer.
Progression from Pre-Clinical
1. The Department of Nursing looks for evidence of personal integrity, intellectual vigor, good health, self-discipline, and self direction, when registering students for clinical nursing courses.
2. Pre-clinical course requirements include:
• A grade of C+ or better in each cognate (BIOL 111, BIOL 112, BIOL 245; Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry; Haematology; Parasitology; Immunology; Biostatistics; PSYC 101; FDNT 234; SOCI 119), or Departmental approval.
• A report of a complete physical examination done within the last year.
• An interview with the admissions committee of the Department of Nursing towards the end of third quarter.
• Completion of ALL cognates and a minimum of 48 credits. No appeals will be considered.
Nursing classes begin in August and the Student is indexed with the Nursing Council of Kenya at that time. Students who arrive on campus during other quarters could take a longer time to complete the programme since some courses are sequential and offered once a year.To avoid overcrowding in the clinical areas and accommodation problems during off campus attachments, a limited number of 20 students will be admitted to the clinical courses. Preference will be given first to those students who were admitted first and those with high GPA scores.
Off-Campus Courses All clinical experiences of nursing courses are offered off campus, and there may be some occasions when the theory will also be offered off campus. Where accommodation is required for those off- campus courses, the student is responsible for locating his/her own accommodation. The faculty of the Department may assist the students in locating such accommodation. While off-campus, students are expected to conduct themselves accordingly to the same policies for Baraton campus.
To transfer credits one must apply with RCHNS to be exempted from NRSG 215, NRSG 229, and NRSG 248. All students on RN/M, RCHN-BScN completion track will be exempted from AGRI 106, HELD 110, ENVI 227, BIOL 105, PEAC 106 and Vocational skills. Exemption for INSY 107 and OFTE 124 may be granted upon providing evidence of proficiency on an individual basis.
A checklist will be provided to guide students on their program of study
REQUIREMENTS FOR CREDIT TRANSFER
1. Course descriptions of syllabi will be required to determine the acceptability of a course or the amount of transfer credits to be granted.
2. Provide an updated C.V.
3. Provide a transcript showing marks and grades that were attained in earlier professional education.
4. Every applicant in the categories of RN, RN/M registration and RCHN may be expected to attend selected sessions of NRSG 215 (Nursing Foundations) as a bridge to professional nursing.
5. Applicants who have been trained in other health related areas other than nursing are not eligible to request for transfer of credits to nursing. They must take all the nursing courses.
