Course content
This course examines the linkages between development and Natural Resources, principles of Managing natural resources, and the sustainable conservation of these resources. Depicting on case studies from a wide range of the current natural resource across the globe, the course considers how different social, political, economic and cultural and gender aspects compete for and sustain the natural resources.
The course also examines how environmental activists and their interventions conserved parks, energy, water and land in the face of climate variability basing on a gender perspective. The course will consider how the current international and development system elaborates and processes to sustainably manage the available natural resources.
The course aims at equipping students seeking qualifications for planning sustainable development, with practical approaches, knowledge and skills necessary for meeting challenges of sustainable use of natural produce competent professionals who can plan for sustainable use of natural resources globally.
Course structure
Contact hours: 54 hours (lectures, tutorials, activities). The course will be delivered Monday – Friday over the 2 weeks. Core hours: Monday – Thursday 09am-3pm. In addition to regular lectures and tutorials, some courses are composed of a range of ‘activities’ relating to their academic content (e.g. museum visit, visiting the source of River Nile etc). On Fridays, all these mini visits will be carried out relating to the course. In the 3rd week, students will go to the field to put theory into practice. Lake Mburo National parks will be the filed site for 2018 summer intake. Students will interact with communities around Rubaale Fishing site, visit the area gazetted for spot hunting and the nearby communities, and interact with communities surrounding the park and their co-existence with wildlife. The last day will be for wild life and birding.

Week 3: Community Outreach/practice- Lake Mburo National Park (LMNP)
- Field study at Rubaale Fishing Community within LMNP
- Spot hunting Area and Enyemibwa cultural conservation centre- within LMNP
- Understanding how communities adjacent to LMNP co-exist with Wild animals
- Touring the park, birding and boating riding in Lake Mburo
Week 4: Horizons for Natural resources and development
- Climate change and natural resources effects
- Parks and Wild life
- Culture and conservation
- Wrap-up
- Assessment: is optional and will be in the form of a 2000-2500 word essay to be handed on line, within 2 weeks after the end of the course.
Teaching and Learning outcomes
At the end of a course, a student should be able to demonstrate:
- At the end of the programme, learners will be expected to have acquired competences in natural resource management and development planning.
- Analytical skills of preserving and conserving natural resources sustainably in the face of climate change.
- Critique international responses to misuse of natural resources
- Skills in cross cultural communication and collaboration

Registration fee for International students
1000 USD, includes housing, airport pick-up and drop-off, two dinners, tour day of Kampala, breakfast and dinner at Lake Mbruo, guide, entrance fees, boattrip, and school fees.
If you share a room you get an 80 USD discount, leaving the total to 920 USD.
Not included: Plain ticket, transport within Kampala and meals not mentioned above.
Registration fee for Kyambogo students
700 USD, including two dinners, tour day of Kampala, breakfast and dinner at Lake Mbruo, guide, entrance fees, boattrip, and school fees.
