Makerere University Nursing School
Staff from the Nursing Department working with Final Year Nursing students and staff from Johns Hopkins University successfully carried out community outreaches in Katanga and Kazo, sensitizing the community about risk factors for Hypertension. Hypertension is increasingly causing high burden of disease among the Ugandan community.
Basic Nursing programme
• One of the youngest Departments in the College of Health Sciences.
• Has been in existence for 16 years – since 1993.
• Programme is for 4 years
• Current student population – 65 and over 160 students have graduated to-date
Aim of the Programme
Educate Nurses for the promotion of health and the reduction of morbidity and mortality, especially maternal and infant mortality
Objectives
The programme aims at equipping nurses and midwives with the knowledge, attitudes and skills to:
1. Provide both basic and advanced nursing care
2. Provide high quality midwifery and promote safe motherhood.
3. Manage common uncomplicated medical/health conditions.
4. Promote and practice Community Based Primary Health Care (CBPHC)
5. Provide opportunities for quality health education for self, students, colleagues and the community.
6. Provide high quality leadership, management and administration, both within the health care system and the community.
7. Initiate, promote and support research in health related services.
8. Contribute to health policy formulation.

• Butabika National Psychiatric Hospital
• Health Centres – Kiruddu and Kasangati under Kampala City Council
• Buluba Hospital (Mayuge District), for Leprosy & TB Control

Makerere University Nursing School Fees Structure
The Fees Structure for a Bachelor of Nursing Degree is 1,344,000 Ugshs for Ugandans, Students from East Africa and Siuth Sudan. Students from Other Countries are to pay 2,240,000 ugshs.
