Masindi Vocational Training Centre
Masindi Vocational Skills Training Center received a donation of 300 million shillings to upgrade it to a fully functional college. For several years Uganda Red Cross has managed the training center, located in Kalyango village in Masindi town. It offered computer training for young men and women from the district to enable them to participate more meaningfully in the development of Masindi. Everest Habai, the Masindi branch coordinator of the Red Cross, says the organization received the donation from ORDINA, a Dutch company, to expand the center. He says it will now incorporate studies in carpentry, tailoring and metal work to attract a large number of youth. Other courses will be available on demand. The new Masindi Vocational Training College will be built on three acres of land donated to the Red Cross by Masindi residents. Construction will begin early next year, after which new staff will be hired and the facility will be equipped to international standards. Habai says the college will initially enroll 60 students from Masindi Municipality. He says that once it is fully established, it will open its doors to people from the rest of the district, as well as Kiryandongo and Buliisa. Once complete, Masindi Vocational Training College will be the third of its kind in Masindi district. ORDINA is also working with the Uganda Red Cross to initiate a 63 million-shilling agricultural project for people living with HIV in Kiryandongo. Everest Habai says the Red Cross is waiting for land to be availed in Kiryandongo for the project to start.
