CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The Academic Registrar Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) invites applications for a three-year PhD programme by Research for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the following areas; PhD (Science), PhD (Computing), PhD (Public Administration), PhD (Economics), PhD (Management), PhD (Business Administration) and PhD (Development Studies). This PhD is a joint institutional capacity building programme between MUST and Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) intended to address the educational gaps at doctoral level in the East African Region. The joint Program has a Steering Board Chaired by the Vice Chancellor of MUST and the Vice Chancellor of UTAMU as a co-chair.

BACKGROUND

Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a public university located within Mbarara Municipality 267 kms from Kampala along Kabale highway, in Mbarara district- South-western Uganda. MUST was founded in 1989. The university is currently running Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate, Post Graduate Diploma, Masters and PhD by research programs in all its faculties/ institutes. Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) was licensed by National Council for Higher Education (License Number: UIPL022) to operate as a Private University in Uganda. It has positioned itself as a high quality education and research institution in Technology and Management (T&M) in the region. Furthermore the University has positioned itself to undertake consultancy, knowledge transfer partnerships and business incubation. The Mission of the university is “To provide global quality education, Research and Innovation critical to economic and human development.

MUST and UTAMU have a lot in common as both universities are focusing on Science, Technology and Management. In the past, the staff at UTAMU have had successful collaborations with MUST especially in the area of ICT capacity building that was funded through Nuffic by the Netherlands government. The coming together of MUST and UTAMU to pool the human resources especially at PhD level for the benefit of both universities and the region is creating a joint centre of excellence in East Africa in the disciplines of science, technology and management that will direct PhD training and research in these disciplines.
PhD PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The duration of the PhD program is three years. The program will involve intensive research and publications in internationally accredited refereed journals. Before graduation, each PhD Student under the guidance of his/her supervisor(s) is expected to publish at least two articles in accredited journals, a list of which will be availed to admitted candidates and supervisors. Remedial seminars, workshops and academic paper writing colloquia will be embedded in the PhD research. This is expected to guide the students on the expectations and the volume of doctoral education for a 21st century researcher. The main supervisor shall be a PhD holder in the same discipline with at least two years of research experience after the PhD and should have published at least three papers in either referred journals or as book chapters in a book with an ISBN published by a recognized publisher.
TARGET GROUP
Specifically, the Program is intended for:
1. University staff who would like to pursue a PhD degree in the areas indicated;
2. Lecturers in other tertiary institutions;
3. Research fellows in the areas indicated;
4. Top level managers from the public and private sector who are desirous of acquiring a PhD; and
5. Any other holders of relevant master’s degrees from recognised institutions.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
(i) Masters degree or equivalent from a recognised university in the same discipline or a related discipline, with sufficiently high grades and proven research ability.
(ii) Students who may wish to transfer their PhD/ doctoral admission from other local and international institutions to this joint programme will be considered through an elaborate evaluation of their previous levels.
