Call for PhD Scholarship in Informal Worker Organization and

Social Protection 2017/2020

This call is under the Mzumbe University (Tanzania) and Roskilde University (Denmark) collaborative research project titled “Informal Worker Organization and Social Protection” housed at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) of Mzumbe University. The overall aim of this research project is to generate new and urgently needed knowledge on emerging forms of informal worker organization and their potential for enabling informal worker access tosocial protection measures in Kenya and Tanzania.

A. PHD RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

The project will explore how different forms of organization by informal workers in three different sectors (construction, petty trade, and transport) facilitate access to social protection measures in Kenya and Tanzania. The comparison between Kenya and Tanzania will allow for exploring informal worker organisation and social protection access in two different institutional contexts. Thus, the project will work with six overall cases and thus compare: a) the same sectors situated within different institutional structures in Kenya and Tanzania: b) three different sectors within each country.The PhD candidate in

Tanzania will conduct research on the construction sector.

This is a full-­‐time PhD whereby the candidate shall be registered into a programme by dedicating 100% of his/her time in studies and is thus expected to accomplishthe PhD in three (3) years. An allowance of two (2) extensions of six month each will be allowed during the entire PhD programme amounting to a total duration of four (4) years.

B. REQUIREMENTS AND MODE OF APPLICATION

1.A candidate seeking to apply for this PhD scholarship shouldpossess (at the time of application)

a Master degree in Development Studies,Sociology, Economics or related Social Sciences with at least 2nd class from any accredited University or any higher learning institution recognized by Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU), and whose average grade is not less than B as evaluated according to Mzumbe University system.

2.Applicants are required to fill in the application forms along with two reference forms. All Referees should be persons who are academically familiar with the applicant, either as his/her tutor/lecturer, research supervisor (at Masters level), or one of them could be a professional associate (immediate manager or employer) for those employed, but NOT relatives or just friends. Reference forms filled by none of the above mentioned persons on the academic suitability of the candidate will not be accepted. The application forms can be downloaded from

3.Applicants should also submit along with the application forms, firstly a one page motivation statement (clearly describing what motivates you to pursue this higher academic degree, what you would like to achieve as a result of your studies, and what impact your studies may/will have on your life, research area and society in general). Secondly, a research concept note of around 2,000 to 3,000 words indicating a research topic intended to be addressed, important literature reviewed, research gaps, research questions and objectives and proposed methodology to address your problem (answers to these questions should be informed by most recent literature based evidence).

4.The application must be accompanied by certified copies of both relevant academic and non-­‐ academic certificates (e.g. O-­‐level, A-­‐lever, 1st Degree, 2nd Degree, birth certificate etc.).

5.Application to this PhD scholarship must be accompanied by a non-­‐refundable application fee of TZS. 30,000/= (for local/national applicants) or USD 30 (for international /foreign applicants) and it should be payable to Mzumbe University, CRDB Account No. 01J1012013400.

6.Only Tanzanian citizens are eligible for this PhD position.

C.THE SELECTION CRITERIA

The selection of the candidate will be based on the followingcriteria:

1.Academic background of the candidate

2.High motivation for research and competence development

3.Academic quality and pertinence of the candidate’s concept note

4.Personal motivation of the candidate to pursue this higher degree

5.Relevant recommendations based on two referees.

6.Knowledge of statistical software, e.g. STATA, SPSS etc. will be an added advantage
