Namibia in Brief

Namibia is situated on the South-western part of Africa. The country gained independence from South Africa in 1990. The Namibian constitution entrenches multiparty democracy and fundamental human rights and freedoms. The country covers 824 268 square kilometres and is divided into 14 regions determined by the Delimitation Commission. Namibia’s neighbouring countries are Angolan to the north, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe to the east and South Africa to the south. The total popolation of Namibia is estimated at 2.1 million with an average population density of 2.6 people per square kilometre. Windhoek is the capital city of Namibia and has a population of +- 365 000. English is the official language while Oshiwambo, Afrikaans, Otjiherero, Khoekhoegowab, German, Silozi, Rukwangali, Rumanyo, Setswana and various San languages are spoken.
