With the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Development Research Division of the South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice is organizing the first Networking Conference and Alumni Seminar on Evaluation of Projects and Politics.

The Alumni meeting will take place from 04 – 15 February 2013 at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa.

Graduates from one of the programmes offered at the Development Research Division (DRD) of the South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice (Bochum Programme of Development Management, MA in Development Studies, MPA as well as related PhDoptions) are invited to participate.

Alumni from Sub-Sahara Africa do have the opportunity to apply for a DAAD-funded scholarship (12 Networking Conference Scholarships in total) which covers transport and accommodation.

The Alumni meeting offers a series of workshops on “Evaluation of Projects and Politics” relevant for the practical work of DRD-Alumni. Senior academics (Prof. Dr. W. Löwenstein, IEE, Prof. Dr. Ch. Hartmann, UDE, and Prof. Dr. J. May, UWC) together with development professionals (Dr. T. Birkendorf, DEG, Dr. Augustin Magolowondo, Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy) will focus on aspects such as impact assessment, democratization, and methodological challenges of evaluation.

Alumni are expected to contribute to the different workshops by giving an input based on their practical experience related to the evaluation of projects and politics.

Seminars are complemented by a networking component during which DRD-Alumni meet with DRD representatives and current DRD students.

One aim of the networking component of the Alumni meeting is the establishment of a formal structure of the DRD-Alumni group via which Alumni will be involved in planning of future Alumni activities.

In addition, Alumni are asked to present case studies related to their practical work to current DRD students with the aim to give students a better idea on future career perspectives.
