The Bishop of the Anglican church in northern Uganda has appealed to his counterparts in South Sudan to work hand in hand with their Uganda colleagues in the search for peace in South Sudan.
“I don’t think the fighting in South Sudan can be ended with guns. I pray that they come back to their senses and stop fighting,” Bishop Johnson Gakumba said yesterday while speaking to journalists at Bibia army barracks, a few kilometers the Uganda- South Sudan border.
The Bishop was speaking at an event organized by the UPDF after successfully evacuating 30,000 Ugandans and other East African nationals trapped by war in South Sudan.
Bishop Gakumba said the church of Uganda is concerned with the humanitarian situation in South Sudan.
Gakumba said by last week, the Church of Uganda had donated 77 cartons of water with several boxes of energy biscuits to South Sudanese refugees who had into Uganda.
Maj Gen David Muhoozi, the UPDF chief of land forces, who officiated the event, praised the army for their role in evacuating Ugandan citizens and other East African nationals from Juba, South Sudan.
The UPDF chief expressed his condolences for five civilians who died in accident en- route to Uganda and for the UPDF soldiers who were injured when their vehicle was shot at on the way to Juba by unidentified people.
