NUST Health Sciences Department
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Health Sciences at the Namibia University of Science and Technology. In January 2008, we had our first intake of students. Currently we offer three programmes, namely, a four-year professional Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences, a three- year of Bachelor of Environmental Health Sciences and a three year Bachelor of Pre-Hospital Emergency Care.
Biomedical Sciences enable students to identify disease-causing bacteria, microscopically differentiate cells, microorganisms and crystals; and operate complex electronic instruments to analyse blood for the presence of abnormal and malignant cells, components and chemical elements. Students will also be able to determine drug levels and evaluate the chemical, cellular and immune composition of blood, urine and other body fluids.
Environmental Health Sciences play a vital role in preventative health care to prevent the outbreak of disease, as well as in health management systems as an integral part of the National Health Care programme in communities.
Emergency Medical Care: Graduates of this programme will be able to competently integrate and apply theoretical principles and practical clinical procedures and techniques in order to independently provide emergency medical care to injured and/or ill patients within the scope of practice stipulated by the Health Professions Council of Namibia (HPCNA).
