Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda’s largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for mobilization and verification of Colleges’ and Other Units’ budgets, for Consolidation
- Responsible for production of detailed weekly, monthly/Quarterly and annual Financial Reports.
- Supervise the reconciliations of Systems Accounts and all accounts at the different bank.
- Maintenance of the Accounting System and Provide regular feedback on its functionality.
- Processing of Payment transactions
- Provide support to College Bursars/Accountants in generating Periodic Reports as may be requested.
- Supervising the Financial Reporting Section Staff.
- Follow up and monitor the Audit findings and implementation of Audit recommendations.
- Perform any other official duties as may be assigned by the line Supervisor.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Principal Accountant job must hold an MBA (Finance/Accounting option), MSc. Finance and Accounting with full professional accounting Certificate from a recognizable institution
- Must be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or Professional qualification (CPA or ACCA).
- Must be a holder of CPA or ACCA Professional qualification.
- A minimum of six (6) years relevant working experience, three (3) of which must have been at Senior Accountant level or equivalent in a reputable organization
- Reporting and communication skills
- Proficient in Accounting Applications (esp. Government Payment & Revenue Collection Systems).
- Financial management, strategic planning and investment skills
- Team leadership skills including team building and individual professional development
- Strategic planning skills that reflect and support organizational needs
- Advanced IT and Numeracy skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to build productive relationship with senior management, employees and external stakeholders
- Age Limit: Below 50 years
