About US:
Kabarole Research and Resource Centre (KRC) is a well-established NGO operating in the Rwenzori Region3 of Western Uganda. It was founded in 1996 with a research mission and a long-term commitment to understanding the measures and drivers of poverty and its solutions. KRC with support from WFP has since 2016 been working with refugees and host communities in Rwamwanja, Kamwenge District and Kyangwali, Hoima District of Western Uganda to implement the Agriculture Market Support (AMS) program with an aim of strengthening capacities of the smallholder farmers to transform their subsistence agriculture into commercial production.This program achieved great milestone in terms of post harvest handling and access to microfinace.
About WFP Program:
It’s from this background that KRC is now planning together with WFP to implement a 3 years AMS program in Kyaka II and Rwamwanja Refugee Settlements in Kyegegwa and Kamwange District respectively. The programme aims at 1) strengthening capacities of the smallholder farmers to transform their subsistence agriculture into commercial production 2) increasing farmers access to Government programmes 3) Strengthening farmers institutions in marketing and finance access and 4) Building partnerships with Local Governments, private sector and international agencies to improve service delivery.
Job Summary: The Program Manager will manage all AMS project activities i.e. activities related to production, post-harvest handling, value addition and marketing, access to finance, climate change adaptation for small holder farmers in cassava, maize, beans, banana and Coffee value chains in Hoima and Rwenzori region and as agreed with the senior management team and in accordance with approved proposal, budget and timelines
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Development of monthly, quarterly and annual program plans and budgets
- Support staff in the development of work plans and performance targets
- Organize regular one-to-one performance sessions with program staff to review progress and resolve any concerns or issues
- Produce Activity, weekly, monthly, quarterly and donor reports
- Conduct monitoring and support supervision to program staff and ensure effective implementation of program activities
- Mentoring and coaching staff in value chain development approach and ensure promotion of gender in maize, coffee and banana value chains
- Ensure full application of participatory methodologies in facilitation of community trainings and workshops
- Identify training needs and opportunities for program staff to ensure that they have adequate resources to complete program objectives, and to enable learning and growth
- Support the program officers to establish a system to monitor and evaluate program activities and impact on an on-going basis.
- Act as the main liaison with relevant district government officials, institutions, agriculture and environment stakeholders and community members relevant to the programs activities
- Support the development of partnerships with district, regional and national and international NGOs, CBOS and other stakeholders involved in the area of agriculture, agricultural finance, climate change and agricultural information access
- Perform any other roles as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Agro-ecology, Agribusiness or any other related field. Post graduate degree in project management is an added advantage.
- Three years of progressive experience at management level
- At least more than 3 years managing agricultural projects/ programs with focusing on enhancing production & productivity, post-harvest handling, Value addition, market access, agricultural finance access for improved household food security and incomes preferably with NGOS.
- Previous experience in managing teams and facilitating planning and program development processes
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
- Ability to speak in either of the following local languages like Runyakole /Rukiga, Kinyabwisha and Kiswahili will be an added advantage
- Ability to use MS word, Excel, Power point
- Ability to generate plans and write reports
- Ability to use participatory tools
- Ability to use different approaches for research, monitoring and evaluation
- Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and appropriate flexibility.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, and work independently and cooperatively with team members.
- Willingness to travel frequently to remote locations.
- Ability to quickly learn and implement new information/concepts
