We are an international NGO committed to environmental protection active in almost 100 countries. WWF has a growing conservation Programme in the Republic of Uganda. WWF Uganda Country Office (WWF UCO) works with central and local government agencies, private sector, civil society organizations (CSOs) and the local communities to implement its various conservation programmes on Energy and Climate, Forestry and Wildlife, and Freshwater in Uganda.
Job Summary: The Programme Officer – FWFW will ensure conservation benefits people especially the poorer segments so as to enhance their participations and benefits as well as reducing their costs of conservation. The Programme Officer will support the program managers in implementation of Forest Wildlife and Freshwater program specifically strategic objectives related to Wildlife, community conservation and livelihood improvement, nature based enterprises, civil society strengthening, gender mainstreaming and related innovative approaches towards integrated community conservation and development in the Rwenzori Region.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in GIS mapping of all program beneficiaries, partners and interventions
- Conducts rapid appraisal of the areas neighboring the park to map sites that require restoration,
- Works with community Conservation Wardens, and District Forest Officers to implement FLR Strategy and establish a buffer around Rwenzori Mountains National Park
- Works with communities adjacent to RMNP to help them establish mixed woodlots on a commercial scale as well as other nature based enterprise
- In collaboration with the District Forest Officers Strengthens institutional, structural, financial technical and technological capacity development of the civil society groups, timber growers and traders’ associations as strong cooperatives that can undertake forest landscape restoration, develop markets and value
- chains of forest products
- In collaboration with Wardens, Research and Monitoring, monitor wildlife in RMNP, restoration activities in the buffer of Rwenzori
- Give support to community conservation department of RMNP in the development of education materials to promote education for sustainable development, Reproductive health, enterprise development for schools and community groups working with the project
- Support the program team to develop the carbon incentives scheme to scale up planting of indigenous tree species
- Develop instruments for monitoring pressure reduction on park resource
- Support UCO and CSO hubs to mainstream social issues in Programme implementation.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant should hold a Degree or equivalent training in Forestry, Environmental Economics, Natural Resource Management or a related discipline.
- At least five years’ experience in or a similar field;
- Track record of delivering results ;
- Experience in engaging with government, private sector and civil society;
- Experience in establishing cooperatives or group markets ;
- Experience working local governments and the local communities;
- Experience in extension work
