Makerere University Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) is a private-not-for profit Company under Makerere University. MJAP works to build partnerships and strengthen health systems to optimally respond to HIV/AIDS, TB and other diseases of public health importance in Africa.
About Project:
MJAP will work in close collaboration with the Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) to implement a program on Accelerating HIV/AIDS Epidemic Control in Masaka region (Gomba, Butambala, Sembabule and Mpigi districts). In addition, MJAP is anticipating a sub-award grant for accelerating HIV/AIDS Epidemic Control in Kampala region; under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
Job Summary: The Public Relations (PR) and Communication Officer will develop, implement, and evaluate MJAP’s communication and advocacy interventions in line with MJAP advocacy and communications policy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work in liaison with the programmes team to develop and implement an effective communication and advocacy strategy for MJAP covering all programme areas
- Develop and ensure operationalization of MJAP’s Public Relations, Communications and advocacy polices, and brand guidelines
- The incumbent will document and profile MJAP’s key interventions in HIV/AIDS and constantly update the organization’s website, social network sites and other communication channels to provide up to date and factual information
- Build strong alliances and networks with public and private partner organizations for communication, concerted advocacy efforts and greater participation in policy dialogue
- Oversee the production and dissemination of Information, Education, and Communication materials; annual reports, quarterly newsletter, audio-visual materials, press releases, media advisories, letters to the editor, op-eds; as well as plan and coordinate key events that promote the visibility of MJAP both at the Head Office and the field offices
- Uphold a consistent, high-quality public image of MJAP, including ensuring organization- wide adherence to MJAP’s visual identity and providing final proofreading and copyediting approval of all communications and programme materials for external distribution
- Build the capacity of MJAP staff in documentation of the activities, knowledge capturing, writing success stories, advocacy, partnership and networking
- Regularly monitor media reporting of MJAP’s activities in our areas of operation and initiate media coverage relevant to MJAP’s key audiences
- Keenly review and implement procedures and systems to strengthen the internal communication processes of the organization through use of all media including social media.
- Document, evaluate and disseminate experiences with key stakeholders arising from advocacy interventions at the Head Office and field offices
- Actively participate in advocacy campaigns on issues related to HIV care, treatment, and prevention and other emerging priorities.
- Prepare an operational activity plan, and budget for PR, Advocacy and communications issues and submit periodic performance reports to the supervisor in line with MJAP’s financial policy
- Develop fundable research proposals for advocacy programs and carry out advocacy oriented research that will advance an AIDS free generation in accordance with MJAP proposal writing guidelines.
- Develop a databank of MJAP’s work including resource materials, media clips (print and electronic), photos, videos and ensure easy accessibility by the organisation’s internal and external stakeholders
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Makerere University Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) Public Relations (PR) and Communication Officer should preferably hold an honour’s degree in Mass Communication (Public Relations/Media Communication).
- Possession of a relevant post graduate qualification in Communication or knowledge management.
- A minimum of three (3) years of working experience in a reputable Non-Governmental Organization
- Working knowledge of project planning & management; principles of donor guidelines; with a strong understanding of Communication and Advocacy issues
- Excellent communication, negotiation, networking and partnership skills.
- The applicant must be dynamic, persuasive & convincing, self-motivated and able to demonstrate high initiative.
- Publication of articles, stories and presentations in various media channels (Press, journals etc) will be an added advantage
