The Department of Fine and Performing Arts was established in 1967 as the Department of Theatre Arts. In 1974 it was expanded to become the Department of Art, Music and Theatre. In 1996, the name changed to the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, while including film studies. All these changes of names are a reflection of the constant positioning of the department in response to the demands emerging from the socio-economic development of the country.

Degree program:

Currently, the Department is the only department in Tanzanian universities that has the longest history in offering degree programs in various art forms including fine arts, music, and theatre and film studies. The degree programs offered include: BA (FPA), MA (Fine Art), MA (Music) and MA (Theatre). The department also offers PhD degrees in these three fields. BA (FPA), i.e. Bachelor of Arts in Fine and Performing Arts is a three-year degree program. A student joining this program selects one of the three fields of study: Fine Arts, Music, Theatre and Film studies.

The program is designed to provide students with wide variety of practical skills and in-depth theoretical knowledge in each of these art forms. Hence, the program prepares its students as competent performing artists (musicians, filmmakers, actors etc), fine artists (graphic designers, painters, sculptors etc.) and academicians.

Courses in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts can also be studied as core or optional courses by students from other degree programs such as BA (Culture and Heritage), BA (Education), BA (Archaeology) and B.Sc (Engineering, Computer Science etc.

Entry Requirements:

The entry requirement for the programme will be those set by the University and the College of Humanities.  These include:

1. Direct Entry/Form VI:

Two principal passes in any Arts subjects. The candidates need to have two or more principal level passes in arts subjects to be admitted into the program.

2. Equivalent Qualifications/Diploma (Teachers Education or NTA Level 6:  

An appropriate Diploma recognized by the University of Dar es Salaam senate with an average of B+ or above.  These Diplomas includes; Diploma in Education with Arts Subjects,  Ordinary Diploma in Arts, Ordinary Diploma in Performing Arts, Ordinary diploma in Culture Heritage Management and Tour Guide , ordinary Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication

Number of Staff: The department has qualified staffs in all the fields of study. You will get to interact with them and work with them in various project and productions.

Cultural officers, Musicians, Filmmakers, Actors, Television producers, Radio  program hosts, Music performers (Instrumentalists, singers),Teachers (in Music, Art, and Theatre) in Secondary schools, Colleges and Universities, Self-employed or Independent artists, Graphic designers , Painters, Sculptors, Museum workers as well as Event managers.
