UDSM SHORT COURSE ON GIS (beginner and Intermediate) 17th to 28th October, 2016

The Institute of Resource Assessment of the University of Dar es Salaam wishes to announce a two weeks short course on “GIS – Beginner and Intermediate)”. The purpose of the course is develop capacity of the participants in using GIS mapping and spatial analysis. ArcGIS software will be used during the course and the participants should indicate whether they will bring their own computers (Laptops) or will use those available at the Institute of Resource Assessment GIS/Remote Sensing laboratory. The course will comprise the following modules:

Introduction to GIS concepts

Map production in GIS

Using a GPS and incorporating data into GIS

Spatial Analysis

Development of a GIS project

Targeted participants

The short course is aimed at a wide range of participants but District Councils/Municipals staff are particularly encouraged to apply.

Project development

During the course, participants will develop a project using real data (Land Use/Cover) available at the Institute of Resource Assessment. Each participant will be given data from her/his own district to take after the course. After the course, participants are expected to further enrich the data (incorporate new roads, schools, health facilities etc.) provided using the knowledge acquired from the course.

Language

The course will be conducted in English. Participants are supposed to possess basic English proficiency to be able to follow the course and be actively involved in the training activities.

Course fees

The course fee will be 800,000 Tanzanian Shillings for two weeks. The fee will cover the course material, lunch and refreshment (Monday to Friday)

Training venue

The short course will be conducted at the Institute of Resource Assessment (IRA), University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Certificate of Attendance

Upon completion of the course, participants will be awarded with a certificate of attendance.
