Uganda Prison Population
The prison population in Uganda is growing at an alarming rate of 10 per cent annually, straining the already poor prison facilities.
The State minister for Internal Affairs , under whose docket Uganda Prison Services falls, said during the passout of 1,228 prison warders and wardresses in Kampala that the inmate population will increase from the current 42,000 to the projected 60,000 in the next five years, if government does not strengthen crime prevention.
“We have to think outside the box and one of the areas we must think seriously about is crime prevention,” he said.
“Case backlog causes congestion in prisons. We appeal to the justice sector to try and conclude these cases,”
The Commissioner General of Prisons, said Uganda has the third biggest number of prisoners in East Africa.
Stating that the passing out of 1,228 staff was the second biggest recruitment exercise in the history of Uganda Prisons. He said it would increase the total force to 7,448 yet the minimum required number is 17,000.
He also requested for recruitment of more staff to manage the increasing inmate population.
The Vice President , who presided over the function, said government would solve the problem of congestion and more staff would be recruited.
