UNAM Information and Communication Department
The Department of Information and Communication Studies offers a B.A. (Library and Information Science) (Honours), B.A. (Media Studies) (Honours) and B.A. (Records and Archives Management) (Honours), as well as a Diploma in Library and Information Science, Diploma in Records and Archives management and a Diploma in Public Relations (PR), distance mode only (CES).
Students are given a wide variety of practical assignments to ensure that they leave the University with experience in a variety of writing styles. To this end, they are required to engage in community journalism, court and parliamentary reporting, economic reporting, and other such. In addition the University has established a permanent community radio station on campus (UNAM Radio), as well as campus publications (UNAM Echo), to give students the opportunity to practice their skills on a regular basis.
In addition, all degree students are required to engage in an internship programme with local and regional institutions, while diploma students are doing fieldwork practice. It is understood by the industry that in this way the students can learn from experienced professionals in the field. Although they are not yet graduate students and are still learning, it is believed that this practical experience is a valuable step in the road to preparing them for full-time work in the media/library/records and archives fields upon graduation.
